Jada Pinkett Smith: 'Blond hair on white women just triggers me'

Adrienne Banfield Jones and Jada Pinkett Smith

During the latest episode of Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk, which dealt with candid conversations about race, her mother talked about how she felt when her daughter once dated a white man named John.

The Greekfest Riots in Virginia Beach were between the police and hundreds of college students who were celebrating the annual event.

Jada Pinkett Smith is talking about race on Red Table Talk.

Gesturing to herself, Pinkett Smith said, "And look at me, I got blonde hair!" And for me, that just was never. I was like, I'm just trying to get down the street so I can get to my hotel and they said, You better get your n***** b**** a** off this street right now, ' she recalled.

For Smith, that response was developed through numerous incidents of racism throughout her childhood.

'We couldn't go to the bowling alley and to get ice cream we couldn't sit at the counter'. "Because that black man has chose to be with that white woman, that's not on her", said Jada.

The mother-of-two said: 'One of the reasons why I have such a hard time with the feminist movement - why I don't call myself a feminist and I call myself a "womanist" instead - is because of the history of the feminist movement.

"I do too. I have a lot of pain and hurt attached to some of the experiences I had as well", added Jada.

The subject at hand: the complicated racial divide between women of color and white women, which Pinkett said was both "real" and very "deep". "I feel bad about that". "I do remember experiencing being teased by white women in regards to my hair, how I looked, feeling belittled", Pinkett Smith responded.

The ladies appeared to enlighten themselves when they talked about how their own family was harder on white women entering the family than white men.

When her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, asked her about the origin of her bias, the 47-year-old said she was bullied by white girls when she was a child.

"We, even as black women, have to be willing to look at our biases that keep us from being able to bridge the gap [with white women]", she added. 'Because we're women, because of the struggles we have had as women.

And then to be part of creating more of a struggle for another women to me is criminal'.
