FA propose new Brexit plan which would significantly impact Premier League clubs

Chelsea

In a bid to deal with Brexit and boost the number of homegrown players, the English FA is planning to reduce the number of overseas players in Premier League squads to 12 from 17.

The FA refused to comment on the matter, but they could be about to seriously shake up the Premier League.

"Even before the Brexit referendum Greg Dyke, then the FA chairman, was looking at ways to reduce the number of what he referred to as "an very bad lot of bog-standard foreign players".

This may mean good news for Gareth Southgate and the England side as some young English talent are given more opportunities in the Premier League.

Like it or not, this includes the Premier League, and the latest exclusive from the Times regarding the FA plans to navigate Brexit covers issues with signing players from the EU.

Two weekends ago, just 62 out of the 220 players starting top-flight matches were English.

The government have also reportedly made it clear that should the FA and the Premier League agree a deal, it will be happy to give the new rules the green light.

It may be mentioned that the Great Khali has instituted the Continental Wrestling Entertainment ( CWE ) in Jalandhar, Punjab. Sawant acted as if she could barely stand in the ring afterward before being helped to the backstage area.

If the FA and the clubs strike a deal based on this plan, there will be a transition period until at least the end of 2020. League chiefs are believed to want work permits granted to all players - regardless of current rules that use the number of worldwide caps, the Federation Internationale de Football Association ranking of the player's national team, the transfer fee and wages to help determine who should be allowed in.

Sky Sports News previously reported that, post-Brexit, the Home Office could resort to a work permit system for European Union nationals that now applies to those from outside Europe.

They don't want to impact clubs' ability to bring in the cream of the crop from overseas, however.

Clubs will consider the idea at a meeting on Thursday, one involving a representative from all 20 clubs where a number of other issues will be discussed - the future use of VAR is expected to be high on the agenda.

Even without the FA aiming to implement this plan, the effects of Brexit are already being felt on Premier League clubs with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino alluding to it as a reason why the club failed to add to their squad in the previous transfer window.

Among the category of homegrown players also fall those footballers who were born overseas but have spent three years in English of Welsh clubs' academies between the age of 16 to 21.

However, should consensus not be reached, even European Union players would have to apply for work permits like non-EU players now do.
