Docs go to war with NRA over 'stay in their lane' tweet

Doctors have been tweeting about their experiences treating victims of gun violence after the NRA mocked a position paper by the American College of Physicians. Above the NRA logo in 2017 at an outdoor sports trade show in Harrisburg Penn

If medical organizations "would like to concentrate on a public health crisis", she wrote, "they should focus on the mental health crisis that results in almost 50,000 suicides per year, the medical community's complicity in the opioid crisis that takes over 42,000 lives per year or the 250,000 deaths due to medical errors". And they have accompanied their indignant messages with photographs of feet sliding on red-splattered floors, of swabs and scrubs drenched in blood, and occasionally of unidentifiable and misshapen torsos heaped on gurneys.

They write of delivering a shattered baby that saved its mother's life by stopping a bullet, and of hiding blood and brain matter from parents.

Several physicians shared graphic pictures of surgery rooms where they had treated gunshot victims.

"Being silenced is not acceptable", Sakran said in an interview, describing how he still keeps the bullet fragment that almost killed him on his dresser.

The NRA did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. "This is me in #mylane, @NRA", @nurielmoghavem tweeted, accompanied by an X-ray image of a patient's torso. "Can't post a patient photo", he wrote, "so this is a selfie".

"I helped save a gun violence victim in med school".

The NRA sent out the tweet in response to the American College of Physicians' new position paper that explains its public health approach to reducing deaths and injuries from firearms, NPR reported.

"The ACP has pressed for the adoption of policies to reduce the number of deaths and injuries related to firearms for more than 20 years and is disheartened by the lack of action to protect the American public", the study concludes.

"The College acknowledges that any such regulations must be consistent with the Supreme Court ruling establishing that individual ownership of firearms is a constitutional right under the Second Amendment of the Bill of Right", the paper said.

Kyrie Irving: Boston Celtics Could Use a '15-Year Vet'
"We play a type of game where it's not like if the tide will turn, it's when the tide will turn", Turner said. I said it at the beginning of the season. "We're not as good as we think we are", Irving said.

Doctors also signed a letter condemning the NRA's tweet and imploring the group to either step aside or join them in fighting the gun violence epidemic.

The NRA tweet came hours before a gunman in Thousand Oaks, California, killed 13 people in the Borderline Bar and Grill and wounding 18 others.

The NRA sniped back with a tweet, telling the docs to "stay in their lane". "Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control", the NRA wrote on Twitter.

"Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted no-one but themselves".

Despite divisive rhetoric spouted off by the NRA and Fox News, the majority of Americans actually support common sense gun reforms, including universal background checks, a mandatory waiting period on gun purchases, and limits on the sale of high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. "Evidence shows that your counsel could save a life", the publication tweeted.

As doctors, we are driven to find the evidence behind the medical care we provide patients. Often, they ask questions that we have no answers to. Usually this is not a problem and is what is expected of us.

Over 25 years in Bronx hospitals, Dr. Marianne Haughey has lost count of how many people she has seen die from gun violence.

"I am not anti-gun, I own firearms", Sidwell said. "I am anti-bullet hole".

Angered by the message, she fired off a reply before heading to the morgue.
