Apple's super security chip is all about lock downs

We’re getting increasingly confused by the tech giant’s lineup of very expensive computers

Apple's latest T2 chip was first introduced to us a year ago when it made an appearance in the tech giant's then-newest computers, the 2017 iMac Pro and MacBook Pro.

In an email to The Verge, iFixit CEO Kyle Weins opined that "the T2 is a guillotine that [Apple is] holding over product owners".

Starting late past year, Apple included a new custom security chip in its computers called the T2. This new integration has made it, so that in case you want to get certain parts of your Mac fixed then you will have to visit an Apple store or visit a fix shop which is part of the company's Authorised Service Provider (ASP) network. Those are the key components, which you can't replace outside an Apple-authorized service center or an Apple Shop. Wiens goes on to say, "It's very possible the goal is to exert more control over who can perform repairs by limiting access to parts". Or it could be a threat to keep their authorized network in line.

The T2 security chip is a Secure Enclave co-processor, which provides the foundation for the APFS encrypted storage, secure boot, and Touch ID on Macs, according to Apple's own whitepaper. "We just don't know".

Overall, the latest step is being seen as one that will further restrict third-party repairs for Macs. The 15.9mm Air still has the distinctive wedge shape, but the rest is all new- Retina IPS 2560 x 1600 display with black bezels, Intel 8th gen low power Core i5-8210Y (from a 5 watt CPU family increased to 7 watts for the Air), up to 16GB RAM, SSD and Apple's 3rd generation Butterfly keyboard. According to a report by MacRumors, it's now easier than ever before to replace the battery on the new MacBook Air.

Apple has also confirmed the same to The Verge that in case of repairs of parts like logic board or Touch ID, the T2 will run checks for select replacement parts and whether they are from an authorized source or not.

But Apple could not supply a list of repairs that required this or what devices were affected. This aspect was first revealed in October, when internal documentation emerged that suggested the T2 chip requires a proprietary diagnostic tool to be run after any repairs are made.
