Salmonella outbreak in 35 states linked to turkey

Deadly salmonella outbreak related to raw turkey grows

One person in California has died, and 63 people have been hospitalized.

As of November 5, 2018, 164 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading have been reported from 35 states. Tests showed that it's also been in live turkeys and pet food.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 74 new cases of salmonella in raw turkey - which has resulted in one death - after an outbreak was declared in July.

The CDC said consumers and retailers should properly cook turkey before consumption and that it was not recommending people avoid turkey products altogether.

IL and Minnesota have seen the most cases since the outbreak started last November. Of 85 people interviewed, 44 (52%) people interviewed reported preparing or eating turkey products that were purchased raw, including ground turkey, turkey pieces, and whole turkey.

It is recommended that you cook turkey to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate bacteria.

It's concerning news in the weeks before the biggest day of the year for turkey consumption.

The Aerosmith guitarist will be unable to appear today at Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp in Florida and apologizes to those attending. According to TMZ , Perry had just performed Aerosmith's " Walk This Way " with Joel (video below), and then collapsed backstage.

You'll also want to make sure you are safely handling the raw turkey.

Salmonella's symptoms usually start 12 to 72 hours after a person gets exposed to the risky bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic. According to the CDC, a number of people have admitted to eating a variety of types and brands of turkey products from different locations.

Salmonella affects around 1.2 million in the US every year, causing diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps up to three days after infection, the CDC states.

Don't spread germs from raw turkey around food preparation areas. Symptoms usually last up to a week, but diarrhea may persist and become a cause for hospitalization. Use a separate cutting board for raw turkey and other raw meats if possible.

Investigators say people got sick from either preparing the turkey, working near it or feeding it to their pets.

The CDC says you should thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, in a sink of cold water that is changed every 30 minutes or in the microwave, but do not leave it on the counter.
