Macron Hosts Trump, Putin, Merkel On 11th Hour, 11th Day, 11th Month

US President Donald Trump is welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron as he arrives for bilateral talks at the Elysee Palace in Paris

Do we govern ourselves as sovereign nation-states and sovereign citizens or as interdependent global communities of world citizens? That is a risk for a leader who may need their cooperation as he confronts China in a trade war and Iran over its foreign and nuclear policies.

He explained that the USA would like to assist Europe with its security obligations, so long as the costs are reasonably distributed, and that's why he's pushed so aggressively for America's allies to increase their contributions to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

In Asia, Mr Trump's decision not to attend a pair of annual Asia summits this month - the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Papua New Guinea, and East Asia meeting in Singapore - is set to heighten concerns over USA reliability among allies there.

The ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe on Sunday was supposed to start promptly at 11 a.m. but some world leaders, including Trump and Putin, arrived late, AP reported. The last to arrive was Russia's Putin, who shook hands with Macron, Merkel and then Trump, briefly giving the U.S. leader a thumbs up. And I say, really, we're not supposed to use that word.

"You have to get the real commitment from the political leaders".

November 11 marks the 1918 end of World War I between the Allies and their opponent, Germany, on land, sea, and air.

President Trump took umbrage at a recent interview in which President Macron talked about the need for a European army and cited the U.S., along with Russian Federation and China, as potential security risks.

During the dinner, Erdoğan met Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

During the event, French President Emmanuel Macron issued a strong rebuke of nationalism.

As Trump prepared to leave France, Macron opened the inaugural Paris Peace Forum, which seeks to promote a multilateral approach to security and governance and ultimately avoid the errors that led to the outbreak of World War One. "I'm a nationalist. OK?"

Trump escalates feud with Sessions
He said he was speaking only for himself and he hoped Republicans might join as plaintiffs if a lawsuit goes forward. It seems very unlikely that Whitaker will stand in the way of Mueller doing so (or that Trump wants him to).

Manchester City vs Manchester United: Who will win the derby?
The game was far from over, however, as United boss Jose Mourinho turned to his bench and sent on Lukaku just before the hour. Man City entered the weekend as one of three unbeaten teams in the Premier League along with Chelsea and Liverpool .

"The aim of the forum is to show that there are lots of forces in the global system - states, NGOs, foundations, intellectuals, companies - who believe we need a world of rules, an open world and a multilateral world", chief organiser Justin Vaisse told AFP.

The U.S. president was also planning to skip the Peace Forum his host was organizing later on Sunday.

Trump had been scheduled to visit a different American cemetery outside Paris on Saturday, but rain grounded the helicopter Trump had planned to take so he cancelled the trip.

"They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn't even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen", Nicholas Soames, a British Conservative member of parliament and grandson of Winston Churchill tweeted.

The gulf between Trump's "America First" credo and European leaders was starkly underscored again later Sunday, when Trump went his own way.

The French president also called on his fellow leaders to not forget the lessons of the past.

But where there's a will, there's a way, and despite initial reports that there'd been no conversation, Putin later said he did manage to sneak a chat with Trump at lunch.

The Russian president is hoping his personal ties with Trump, who regularly touts their good relationship, will at some point yield a softening of the US approach to his country. The Elysee denied any switch in seating arrangements. But Mr. Trump later said he would instead sit down with him formally later this month at a world leaders' summit in Buenos Aires.

French Interior minister Christophe Castaner later said President Trump's security had "in no way been threatened". A stronger European military would take a step towards building the multi-polar order for which Russian Federation has long argued, Mr Putin said. That is a model that Moscow believes would dilute the transatlantic alliance.

Around 1,500 anti-Trump protesters held a demonstration at Republique square in eastern Paris on Sunday, at which the giant "Baby Blimp" balloon depicting Trump as an infant was flown, following previous appearances in London and NY. And I think it's very fair and it's very important, ' he said.
