With California's Raging Fires, Fear And Devastation

"Our firefighters have been facing some extreme, tough fire conditions that they said they've never seen in their lives", said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby.

About 300,000 people statewide were under evacuation orders, a lot of them in Southern California. Together, responsible for the destruction of 179 structures, but another 57,000 are threatened, according to fire officials.

From north to south, California was engulfed by five identified fires on Saturday.

Containment increased from 20 to 25 percent overnight and the cities of Oroville and Chico escaped damage. But the strong, dry Santa Ana winds that blow from the interior toward the coast returned after a one-day lull, fanning the flames.

Almost 6,500 residences have been destroyed and another 15,000 threatened, according to emergency officials. Not much is left in Paradise after a ferocious wildfire roared through the Northern California town as residents fled and entire neighborhoods are leveled.

The president of the California Professional Firefighters, Brian K Rice, said the message is an attack on some of the people fighting the devastating fires. Natural-color satellite photos show thick smoke from the fires around Paradise other nearby towns. Information on Camp Fire affecting Butte County can be found on CA.gov. Authorities said they have reports of 110 people still missing in the area affected by the blaze. But with strong winds projected through the beginning of the new week, containing the fire will be more hard.

Gusts of up to 15 miles per hour are possible in and around towns such as Chico and Oroville Sunday morning, but Baruffaldi said the winds should calm by the afternoon.

Red flag warnings will return in the evening, McLean said, marking strong winds and dropping humidity. "It completely ignores the dynamic of what's going on around us", he told the Chronicle.

In southern California, a quarter million people are under evacuation orders in Ventura Country and neighboring Los Angeles County due to wildfires.

The blaze known as Camp Fire that began on Thursday had grown to almost 140 square miles (362 square kilometers), wiping out much of Paradise, home to some 30,000 residents. The smaller Hill Fire covered 4,531 acres and was 70% contained. It traveled into an old burn scar, where a previous fire had passed years ago.

In a tweet on Saturday, he accused state authorities of "gross mismanagement" of forests.

The devastation was so complete in some neighbourhoods that "it's very hard to determine whether or not there may be human remains there", Honea said.

She said she has had a house in Malibu since 1972 and "can't bear the thought of there being no Malibu". "We do not want any more lives lost".

Fire.ca.gov's Incident Information page provides everything you need to know about what's happening on the ground in these areas, with full evacuation info, available evacuation centers and shelters (including ones specifically for animals) and key road closings.

The revised death toll means the disaster has matched the deadliest wildfire on record in Californian history. "Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!"
