Stephen Hawking’s wheelchair sells for £300,000 at auction

Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis, written in 1965, has sold for nearly £585,000 in an online Christie's auction.

It was expected to fetch £150,000 but interest from across the world saw it reach nearly four times that amount.

Medals and awards sold for £296,750, compared with an estimate of £15,000, while the red motorized wheelchair sold for £296,750, also compared with an estimate of £15,000.

Christie's, a London-based auctioneer, handled the sale, which was first announced back in October. Hawking's items all combined sold for about $1,306,275 at the auction.

The motorized chair, used by Hawking after he was paralyzed with motor neuron disease, raised 296,750 pounds in a Christie's online auction.

The red motorised wheelchair once used by Hawking went under the stamp for $391.7 million while his Cambridge thesis titled "Properties of Expanding Universes" was sold for $7.6 million.

Famed for his work exploring the origins of the universe, Hawking died in March at the age of 76 after spending most of his life confined to a wheelchair with motor neurone disease.

.

In addition to Hawking's personal documents and items, an original production script for Stephen Hawking's final appearance on The Simpsons-in which he was portrayed as a disc jockey with gold chains and a Kangol hat-also sold 6,250 pounds ($8,157). It featured pieces belonging to other celebrated thinkers including Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin. All of those were sold, and the total, about US$1.8 million, was seven times more than had been predicted.

The items are only a small selection from Hawking's archive, which his family is donating to the nation in lieu of paying inheritance tax, although there are no details yet of where it will be stored.
