Mysterious object in space might be alien

Oumuamua the possible alien spacecraft

"Oumuamua may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization", according to the paper forthcoming in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. "Nevertheless, if other experts agree with their claims, it would suggest (not prove) that other civilizations do exist that are at least somewhat more advanced than we are since the object would have to have been launched some time ago".

Another possibility is this mystery object might be debris from an advanced technological equipment.

"Most intriguingly it's moving on a trajectory that implies an extra push in addition to the gravitational force from the sun".

"I don't think they are saying that this object is now making observations within the solar system, but [rather it] is likely something that stopped functioning some time in the past", Rhodes said.

That could be the result of "outgassing": frozen gases melting in the solar heat, and acting like rocket fuel. 'Oumuamua, however, didn't have a "coma". But that's usually seen in comets - which typically break completely apart if they get that near to the sun.

Formally designated 1I/2017 U1, 'Oumuamua was discovered by Robert Weryk using the Pan-STARRS telescope at Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, on October 19, 2017, or 40 days after it passed its closest point to the Sun.

Scientists first called this thing that's been tumbling through space a comet and then an asteroid. They called it an "interstellar object".

The study noted the possibility that the elongated dark-red object, which is 10 times as long as it is wide and travelling at speeds of 315,364 km per hour (kmh), might have an "artificial origin", Xinhua news agency reported.
