London detains wife of jailed Azerbaijani banker

Zamira Hajiyeva is the subject of the first two unexplained wealth orders (UWO) obtained by the UK National Crime Agency (NCA), and has been ordered to explain how she paid for two properties worth £22 million ($29 million) in total, Britain's Press Association reported in October.

The National Crime Agency accused Ms Hajiyeva of fleeing her home country to avoid criminal investigations.

She faces two charges of embezzlement and has been been held in custody since giving herself up voluntarily last Tuesday. While he languished in a prison cell, she had continued to live in London where she spent £16m in the upmarket Harrods store over a decade, court documents revealed last month.

Police first went after Mrs Hajiyeva in February but her lawyers had claimed that her husband was the victim of an unfair trial.

However, prosecutors appealed the decision, meaning she will remain in custody pending an appeal on November 8.

Senior district judge Emma Arbuthnot agreed that Mrs Hajiyeva could be released on bail as long as she pays £500,000 as a guarantee, stays at her home in Knightsbridge, does not travel outside the M25 and reports to police every day.

Two Major Fires Burning in Ventura County
A second round of Santa Ana winds is forecast to whip the area Sunday through Tuesday, though it may be weaker than Friday's. Local news reporter Tom Wait of CBS2 described the fire as "apocalyptic" with ember and ash raining down from the flames.

The court of appeal heard she made the purchases on three Harrods customer loyalty cards, using 35 credit cards from the International Bank of Azerbaijan, her husband's bank. The orders allow authorities to seize assets from people suspected of corruption or links to organised crime until the owners account for how they were acquired.

Ms Hajiyeva also bought an $20.7 million five-bedroom home which, according to UK's The Guardian, was roughly 90 metres from the Harrods doors.

Last week the agency, which investigates cross-border and organised crime, seized 49 items of jewellery worth £400,000 from Christie's auction house, where Hajiyeva's daughter had taken them to be valued.

Mr Justice Supperstone dismissed her application to discharge the UWO, as well as an anonymity order preventing the identity of her and her husband, their country of origin, the bank her husband worked for, and the two properties.

Hajiyeva has denied any wrongdoing.
