Pop star’s mushroom cloud t-shirt bombs in Japan

TV Asahi cancels performance of K-pop group BTS over A-bomb shirt

"A t-shirt design worn by one of the members caused controversy. we had been discussing it with the record label".

Korean fans believe that TV Asahi's decision to "postpone" BTS's appearance was a strictly political move, as now, Korea and Japan are facing political friction. It's said that the photos were taken on National Liberation Day of Korea in 2017, which marks the end of World War II, and by extension Japan's occupation of Korea.

BTS' planned appearance on "Music Station", a flagship music program of Japanese broadcaster Asahi, has been canceled, stirring up a whirlwind of controversy.

However, not all netizens are supporting the above claims, as some argued, "BTS's issue has nothing to do with IZ*ONE, don't try to make up these kinds of connections", "Keep BTS and IZ*ONE separate", "It's true that BTS getting cancelled sucks but it's not like it's IZ*ONE's fault", and such.

BTS has said in a statement over the the row: "We apologise for disappointing fans who were looking forward to this".

Japanese social media was filled with chatter over the photo of Jimin wearing the shirt with an image of a mushroom cloud with the English words "patriotism" and "Korea".

The t-shirt appeared to reference the end of the Japanese occupation of Korea, which ended in 1945 after the USA dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The two countries have strained relations due to Japan's occupation of the Korean Peninsula in the early 20th century until the end of the Second World War.

It is believed that Jimin wore the shirt previous year.

Jimin, 23, was reportedly photographed wearing the shirt past year on 15 August, when Koreans mark the anniversary of the end of the Japanese occupation. "They made a joke of the atomic bomb", one Twitter user had said ahead of the cancelled performance.

The cancellation comes as ties between Japan and Korea have becoming increasingly strained in recent years.

Last month, Tokyo reacted furiously after South Korea's top court ordered a Japanese steel giant to compensate victims of wartime forced labor programs. With the Japanese government maintaining that all matters of compensation were settled through a treaty in 1965, political tension is high between the two countries.
