Midterm lessons: five key takeaways from the election results

Another 11 per cent said they would prefer Vice-President Mike Pence and 12 per cent said they did not know who should be the nominee. He has also inspired record-breaking turnout at the ballot box.

In the weeks leading up to the Midterms, Trump ramped up the rhetoric when it came to shading the Democrats.

After retaking control of the US House of Representatives and its many committees earlier this week, a Democratic congressman told the Washington Post that he is ready to investigate the Trump administration's foreign-policy decisions, including those regarding Saudi Arabia.

The biggest takeaway, I write in my column at The Week, is the reversion of Trump country in the "blue wall" back to its political identity - a reversion that has serious implications for 2020.

In fact, as I am writing this, it appears that enough Republicans will have won Senate seats that it will be far more hard for Democrats to have a shot at winning a Senate majority in 2020 than anyone might have expected.

The Democratic Party registered a historic win in the midterm elections and regained control in the House of Representatives. All are states that Barack Obama won twice but that Trump won in 2016, and are a indication that Republicans may have made lasting gains in those states.

The Democratic majority in the lower chamber will be in a position to block Mr Trump's legislative programme.

But both parties exceeded turnout expectations. There's only one Democrat up from a deep red state - Sen. Voter participation rates jumped by around 10 points in both states.

The trend was similar in battleground Florida, where voting increased 33 percent over 2014.

Those backgrounds created a sense of authenticity voters responded to, said Maeve Coyle, a spokeswoman for EMILY's List in Washington, D.C., a group that works to elect Democratic women to office. Those seats were previously held by Republicans or an Independent. Urban areas are Democratic, rural states and regions are Republican, suburbs are evenly split.

MI added to top four in rankings
Georgia moved up a spot to No. 5, putting it just outside the coveted top four spots for teams that will play in the semifinals. The loss of that game, should it have been a WVU win, might have been a difference in one or two slots in this week's rankings.

However, mental health specialists who were called in "talked to him, and cleared him". "I just started hearing these big pops". Witnesses said he wore something like a ski mask as he opened fire in the packed club at around 11.20pm on Wednesday evening.

Midterms serve as practice run for Trump's 2020 re-election campaign
Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley , a Democrat who ran unopposed, became the first black woman to represent MA in Congress. Congress: Ilhan Omar, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war, and Rashida Tlaib, a Detroit-born Palestinian-American.

Out of curiosity, TIME gamed out what a presidential election would have looked like in 2018 if one were to replace votes for House candidates with votes for a presidential candidate of the same party.

And Trump - who said Democrats would "take a wrecking ball to our economy" - now has two ready-made scapegoats to blame for any slowdown: the Democratic-controlled House, and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, who he has repeatedly attacked for raising rates.

And she has "total" confidence that she will do so - despite many newly elected House Democrats distancing themselves from her during their campaigns.

In congressional race after congressional race, Republicans suddenly found millions of dollars poured in against them on a scale that resembled Senate races in the past.

Governors - who head the executive branch in state governments - have been chosen in 36 out of 50 states. He says the role women played in this election lived up to expectations.

In Wisconsin, the Democrats finally claimed Scott Walker's scalp.

The data left little doubt as to what caused the surge in enthusiasm. Among those who consider that "important", two-thirds voted for Democrats.

To their everlasting discredit, the Republicans who controlled the House during the first two years of Trump's term never seriously challenged the president, placing their own careers above the importance of holding a president accountable.

Even Richard Neal, from MA, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, who intends to push for Mr Trump's tax returns, said that launching investigations "cannot be the sole goal of this election". "As you also know, every eight years we change parties in MI".

Democrats feel a sense of urgency about Mueller's investigation after the president asked for and received a resignation from U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions the day after the midterm elections. He'd also face the prospect of losing Iowa from his 2016 map.

"Well, I'd like to be president", said. "The president was very helpful to us".
