Ottawa Senators apologize after trashing team, coach while in Uber

Ottawa Senators' Matt Duchene takes part in training camp in Ottawa on Friday Sept. 14 2018

Senators assistant coach Martin Raymond was a frequent target of the players' criticisms.

The Ottawa Citizen says the video, recorded by an Uber driver in Phoenix, Ariz., was circulating on social media when the paper chose to report on it and share it to its website. Earlier in the day, Stone dismissed the latest drama to the Senators season as a "hiccup" and said the team is already repairing the frayed relationship between players and coaches that was laid bare in the video.

Neither the Ottawa Citizen nor parent company Postmedia Network Inc. immediately responded to a request for comment.

Rob Khazzam, general manager for Uber Canada, said as much.

The video appears to have been taken without the players' knowledge.

The players in the Uber were Matt Duchene, Chris Wideman, Chris Tierney, Thomas Chabot, Alex Formenton (since sent down to the juniors), Dylan DeMelo and Colin White.

Duchene later added he hasn't "paid attention in three weeks" in Raymond's meetings.

Raymond, in his third season with the Senators, was responsible for the power play for much of last season and is in charge of the team's penalty killing this year.

"We're passionate about our team, and focusing on growing together".

Kotak believes, unfortunately, this will not be the last case of what is seen as a breach of privacy in this type of scenario.

Duchene can be heard replying: "Here's the other thing, too".

Two Jets players - goalie Connor Hellebuyck and defenceman Josh Morrissey - were asked about the Senators video as well but declined to comment. "Right now, it's an off-the-cuff conversation with members of the Ottawa Senators, but it could be a private conversation between husband and spouse - what about between lawyers and clients and attorney-client privilege and all the stuff that comes into that, so we need better guidelines". We are grateful for the support of our fans and organization.

Tierney, seated behind the driver, looked up the team's stats on his phone and found Ottawa is 29th of 31 National Hockey League teams in terms of penalty killing. "This is an important learning experience, and we will do better".

Senators Head Coach Guy Boucher also apologized on behalf of the team.

"We don't change anything, ever", he said. "We are now treating this as a team matter, and will be making no further comment to the media". It said the video was originally posted elsewhere over the weekend and has since been deleted.

"Filming or recording passengers without their consent is totally unacceptable and if reported/detected we will investigate", he added.
