Democrats Are Now Projected to Take Back the House

Turnout for mid-term elections is traditionally lower than in presidential years, but the results could have dramatic implications for the United States, and in particular for Trump's legislative agenda. Democrats were buoyed by a wave of Republican retirements and an overwhelming fundraising advantage.

Some Democrats have vowed to force the release of his tax returns.

Democrats needed to pick up two dozen seats to seize the House majority and two seats to control the Senate. "Two can play that game!"

Republicans were banking on those dynamics being offset by a vibrant economy and by a president whose insult-laden approach to political discourse was as stirring for conservative voters as it was infuriating to liberals.

Former President Barack Obama said while campaigning for Democrats: "The character of our country's on the ballot".

But what are the midterm elections and why are they important? "Those that did not, say goodbye!" "But, could happen", Ryan said during a campaign rally.

"Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!" he added.

In the Senate, depending on how results from other races shake out, there is the possibility that control is not known on election night or for weeks after.

"Tomorrow will be a new day in America", Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a victory party in Washington.

And on Wednesday, he said she deserves to be House speaker.

What it would mean: Imagine a scenario in which Democrats lead 50-49 on Election Day in the Senate, and the eyes of the country - and the deep pockets of out-of-state money - descend on Mississippi.

"If the radical Democrats take power they will take a wrecking ball to our economy and our future", Trump declared in Cleveland, using the heated rhetoric that has defined much of his presidency. "She has earned this great honor!"

Guns n Roses slams Trump for using its music

As Democrats picked up speed in their quest for the House, which would give them the ability to launch investigations into the president and stymie his agenda, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders minimized likely Democratic gains.

Control of both houses of the US Congress, now dominated by Republicans, and 36 governors' offices will be at stake when Americans vote on Tuesday.

Democratic control of the House would break the GOP's monopoly on power in Washington and would nearly certainly lead to an onslaught of investigations of Trump's businesses and his administration. He frequently invoked his upset win in 2016 and tried to recapture that energy in his final rallies, at times relegating the candidates he had traveled to endorse to supporting actors in the theater of a Trump rally.

First, any Democratic Senate majority would likely be narrow, short of the 60 votes needs to avoid a Republican filibuster.

The Indiana victory by Mike Braun, a businessman and former state legislator who closely embraced Trump, coupled with GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn's triumph in Tennessee put Democrats in a grim spot in their longshot drive to capture the Senate control.

The election served as a referendum of sorts on Trump's racially charged appeals and the strength of the coalition that powered him to the White House - a group he will need again in just two years. Retired navy commander Elaine Luria wrested a House seat away from former navy SEAL and first-term congressman Scott Taylor in Virginia's 2nd district, a region where the president has proven deeply unpopular.

Republicans rolled into the election with a 77-57 House majority.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while about 25 percent said they voted to express support for Trump.

The comments came as Mr Trump prepared for a final, three-state rally blitz as he tries to keep Congress in Republican control and stave off losses that could profoundly change his presidency.

He and the first lady were to host an evening watch party for family and friends.

Opposition to Trump proved to be more a motivating factor for Democrats than support for the president a factor for Republicans.

While an August poll by Rasmussen Report indicated Trump's approval rating among African Americans doubled year-on-year to reach 36 percent, most analysts still believe African Americans belong to the Democratic camp. But the president received negative marks from voters on temperament and trustworthiness.

That same math would protect Trump from impeachment, which requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate.
