Nadal out of ATP Finals with abdominal injury, ankle surgery

I have abdominal pain every time I serve says Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal has pulled out of next week's ATP Tour Finals in London due to injury, so Novak Djokovic will end the year as world number one having returned to the top of the rankings on Monday. But one of the least satisfying numbers, from the perspective of British tennis fans, will be his history of non-attendance at the ATP Finals. He had surgery on his right ankle Monday.

In a post on social media, 17-time Grand Slam champion Nadal wrote: "It has been a complicated year, very good at the tennis level when I was able to play, and at the same time very bad as far as injuries are concerned".

Djokovic will be the ATP's year-ending No. 1 for the fifth time, pulling even with Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors for the second most since the computer rankings began in 1973.

He added that he chose to have the ankle operation so he can start 2019 healthy.

"I am writing to you to signal the end of the season", Nadal said.

In a statement released on Twitter, Nadal confirmed the problem which forced him to miss the final Masters 1000 tournament of the campaign and continued pain in his ankle was the reason behind his absence from the elite eight-player field in London.
