Statement from DCPI on Body Worn Camera Issue

NYPD recalls almost 3,000 body cameras after one explodes

Officials did not say how many cameras were recalled, but the NYPD has almost 3,000 LE-5 models in use, according to ABC New York Station WABC-TV. Those officers using the LE-5 have been told to bring the devices back to their precincts and will not have to wear a body cam at this time.

Luckily, no one was injured when the camera burst into flames.

The officer was wearing the body camera during a midnight shift in the 121st Precinct on the northwestern shore of Staten Island when he noticed smoke coming from the bottom of the device late Saturday night, according to the Police Department.

An internal order released by Police Commissioner James O'Neill said the cameras were being removed out of an abundance of caution, according to the Daily Beast.

The NYPD has deployed 15,500 body-worn cameras, and the earlier model, the Vievu LE4, is not affected by the defect.

O'Neill suspended the use of some bodycam devices "effective immediately" after one of the city's cameras exploded over the weekend. This was moved up from the city's original projection that all officers would be equipped with body cameras by the end of 2019.

"The cause and the scope of the defect are now being investigated", police officials said in a statement. "We are working closely with the NYPD to investigate this issue", a spokesperson said.

"Officer safety is of the utmost importance to Axon". The explosion "revealed a potential for the battery inside the camera to ignite", police say. "We will do whatever is necessary to quickly and safely resolve this situation".
