Journalist Jamal Khashoggi death `a mistake`: Saudi Arabia

Jamal Khashoggi

The Saudi foreign minister has since called his death a "huge and grave mistake".

Jubeir had extended condolences to Khashoggi's family earlier on Sunday.

European nations should take a joint stance on whether to halt arms exports to Saudi Arabia over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said Monday.

"Even the senior leadership over intelligence service was not aware of this", al-Jubeir said.

A bipartisan group of USA lawmakers is accusing the crown prince of directing the operation.

"While it might be too early to evaluate the reaction of the global community, these moves might be read as a serious initial signal that the Saudi leadership is course correcting", wrote Ayham Kamel, the head of Mideast and North Africa research at the Eurasia Group.

President Donald Trump said Saturday he would speak to the crown prince "very soon" as he works to determine what, if any, consequences the USA ally will face for the killing of a dissident journalist.

"The strength of our response will depend on. our confidence that it can not happen ever again", the British foreign office said.

"But if you have other countries to decline in addition to the full application of Iran sanctions, then we will be pulling all spare capacities", Falih said. Saudi Arabia so far has not acknowledged or explained Mutreb's presence in Istanbul - nor that a forensics and autopsy expert was also on hand for Khashoggi's arrival at the consulate.

On Saturday Riyadh said he was killed in a fistfight in the consulate.

It is a step that President Donald Trump has signaled his opposition to, citing the value of United States arms exports to the kingdom.

On Saturday, the Saudi authorities said that Khashoggi died in the course of a "fight" with agents who were trying to interrogate him in the legation.

In a speech on Sunday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan appeared to suggest he was getting ready to release some information about the Turkish investigation, and would do so at his weekly speech on Tuesday to members of his ruling AK Party.

In exclusive law enforcement surveillance footage CNN aired Monday, the man appears to have left the Saudi consulate by a back door, and was later seen in the dead journalist's clothing, with a fake beard and classes, at Istanbul's Blue Mosque in the hours after the journalist was last seen alive on October 2.

"Khashoggi was detained by the Saudi team inside the consulate building".

"The Saudi account has been met with widespread worldwide skepticism and allegations of a cover-up".

Turkish authorities have put the fiancee of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi under 24-hour police protection, the state-run Anadolu news agency said yesterday.

Sen. Rand Paul told "Fox News Sunday" that the USA "cannot continue to have relations with him and so I think he's going to have to be replaced". "Do I think he did it?"

"Second, there is an urgent need to clarify what happened - we are far from this having been cleared up and those responsible held to account".

"Corker tells CNN's "State of the Union" that the crown prince has "now crossed a line and there has to be a punishment and a price paid for that".

According to Ward's reporting, senior Turkish officials "are convinced the killing was a premeditated murder and they believe the Saudis went to the extent of sending a body double leaving the consulate to cover up the murder".

"We have relatively limited spare capacities and we are using a significant part of them", he said.

For weeks Saudi Arabia denied knowledge of what happened to him, initially claiming Khashoggi had left the building.

The next day a Saudi official insisted that Khashoggi had left shortly after getting the paperwork and that he was "not in the consulate nor in Saudi custody".

"We will continue in that relationship, while we also simultaneously want to get to the bottom of what the facts are about the Khashoggi situation, which is obviously a awful situation", Mnuchin told reporters, adding it would be "premature to comment on sanctions" before a probe into the writer's death is complete.

The EU said the continuing investigation should bring "proper clarity on the circumstances of the killing and ensuring full accountability of all those responsible for it". While the official report won praise from US President Donald Trump, many politicians and leaders in America and Europe questioned the official explanation that he was accidentally killed in an altercation. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, and there are no significant checks on the crown prince's powers.

Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post, had been missing since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. "This is not an explanation; it is a cover-up", Mr. Ryan said.

"It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers", Mr Trump said, adding: "Who knows?"
