World no.1 Simona Halep withdraws from WTA Finals

Simona Halep

"Unfortunately, after much discussion with my team and doctors, I have made the decision to withdraw", the 27-year-old Romanian said on her verified Twitter account of an injury sustained during training ahead of the Wuhan Open last month and later diagnosed as a herniated disc.

Having to withdraw from what is labelled as the fifth biggest tournament in women's tennis, it is definitely a tough decision for Halep although her health should always be the priority. "So I am definitely sad to see it go, but at the same time, it's had any wonderful run and the five years, I think they have done an incredible job". So it was a tough decision but it's better for my health.

"My back is not ok".

"I need to take a break and do exercises three or four weeks, and then all will be well. It's not easy to go on court and compete at this moment".

Despite withdrawing from Singapore, Halep though is guaranteed to end 2018 as world number one for the second consecutive year.

She won the Shenzhen Open, the Rogers Cup and her maiden Grand Slam crown at Roland Garros.

Italy brushes off downgrade as it plans European Union budget response
Moscovici met Economy Minister Giovanni Tria in Rome to present a letter outlining concerns over Italy's draft budget. It could lend to governments that have been conducting sound economic policy, but were hit by external crises.

The Romanian, who secured the end of year top ranking for a second successive season earlier this week, has made the hard decision not to compete in Singapore to put her "long-term health first".

"Singapore is a special city and I'm sure the fans will enjoy seeing some fantastic women's tennis this week".

Replacing her in the Singapore singles line-up is Kiki Bertens, a losing finalist in the doubles with Sweden's Johanna Larsson a year ago.

Bertens has had a breakthrough season at the very top level and recently became the first Dutch player to make the top 10 for more than 20 years.

Halep would defeat three consecutive major champions - Angelique Kerber, Garbiñe Muguruza and Sloane Stephens - and come from a set down three times in a title run characterized by fighting spirit, strategic changes to turn matches around and, ultimately, an ability to play her own best tennis when it mattered most.
