Facebook tentatively concludes spammers were behind recent data breach

Facebook tentatively concludes spammers were behind recent data...

The identity of the attackers might never be revealed as the social network is keeping tight lipped, however internal researchers told the Wall Street Journal of the suspected motives.

While an ongoing investigation revealed that just 30 million accounts were affected by Facebook's most recent hack, concerns arose around foreign states and supposed political motives as the USA midterm elections rapidly approach.

Facebook has been investigating the hack, which it calls the biggest security breach in its history, since its discovery on September 25.

It was originally believed that up to 50 million users had some of their details stolen before Facebook revised that number down to 30 million.

The social media giant disclosed at the end of last month that it had become victim to a hack, and preemptively reset a total of 90 million accounts.

Uganda, at 'big risk' for Ebola, says Congo is managing well
The current outbreak of the highly infectious Ebola virus in northeastern Congo has had 185 confirmed cases, including 107 deaths.

According to the preliminary findings of the internal investigation of Facebook, these crooks were trying to earn money with ads of the type "spam" and were obviously not pirates in the pay of a foreign country, says the economic daily, citing an anonymous source close to the investigation.

The Journal reported Thursday that the hack was committed by a group of Facebook and Instagram spammers who have been associated with a digital marketing company.

This attribution is supported by the attackers' decision to compromise a limited amount of information that was available to them.

The hackers had access to a series of personal data obtained from about 14 million user accounts. The attackers were able to access the accounts as if they were owners, but have, according to the social network, not published or modified content.

The people responsible behind the attack were able to exploit a vulnerability in the "View As" feature, which allows users to see how their profile looks to other people. "The FBI is actively investigating and have asked us not to discuss who might be behind the attack". On the question of exposing the identities of the hackers, Facebook declined to share any details citing Federal Bureau of Investigation directions, which is also investing the case.
