Stephen Hawking: AI could subdue humans with weapons

Quantum Gravity

In Stephen Hawking's final book "Brief Answers to Big Questions", published Tuesday (Oct. 16) by Bantam Books, the professor begins a series of 10 intergalactic essays by addressing life's oldest and most religiously fraught question of all: Is there a God?

"If you like, you can say the laws are the work of God, but that is more a definition of God than a proof of his existence", Hawking wrote.

Hawking warned that education and science are "in danger now more than ever before".

Among Hawking's other important assertions and findings, sequences concerning extraterrestrial life and artificial intelligence will interest readers. "I prefer to think that everything can be explained another way, by the laws of nature", he adds, moving on to speculate about the possibilities of would-be time travel. To me this means there is no chance of a creator, because there was no time for a creator to exist.

Despite ruling out the presence of God as such, he surprisingly asserts that there are "forms of intelligent life out there", saying there is definitely a need for being "wary of answering back until we have developed a bit further". "No one directs the universe", he writes.

Hawking previously said he did not believe in God and admitted to being an atheist, Time reported, but he also made several other interesting conclusions in his latest book.

In his last Reddit post before his death, which took place as a Q&A on the forum, Hawking said he feared Earth would have a "catastrophic ending" in the near future and that it he thought it could be due to smart robots that might take over the planet.

They include the question "is time travel possible" - which the scientist said "can't be ruled out".

US opens federal investigation into Catholic Church abuse
McSwain said she could not "confirm, deny or otherwise comment on the existence or nonexistence of an investigation". It was not reported to authorities until September 2016 in response to a grand jury subpoena, according to Shapiro.

"Reverse the flow of time can not be ruled out, according to our modern understanding, he says, and adds: - In the next hundred years people will be able to travel anywhere in the Solar system".

And he raised a very good question: "How good is the track record of the human race in using advances in technology for the good of ordinary people?"

"He makes this comment about how we seem to have lost the ability to look outward, and we are increasingly looking inward to ourselves", she added.

The British scientist pointed to his own diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, for the basis of his belief.

If you'd like a copy of Hawking's final book, it's now available on Amazon.

Lucy Hawking said the final book is a "carefully curated" piece containing answers to questions regularly asked of the world famous physicist.

Do you agree with Hawking's theories?
