Trump threatens to close southern US border over caravan of migrants

President Trump is again ramping up his rhetoric on an issue he said he hopes can energize his Republican base heading into the midterms, with an all-caps threat to shut down the southern USA border if Mexico doesn't stop the "onslaught" of a caravan of migrants fleeing Honduras. "Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border".

If the country failed to do so, he would proceed to close the border with Mexico, Mr Trump claimed.

Trump also threatened to upend a pending trade deal with Mexico that took more than a year to negotiate and is created to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, is travelling to Mexico City and expected on Friday to meet Mexico's president, Enrique Pena Nieto, to discuss the situation, as Mexico scrambles to dissuade the migrants from entering its territory.

That complicates efforts to deport Central Americans who travel through Mexico in the United States because American officials must arrange to fly apprehended illegal immigrants to their home countries.

A day after warning Central American governments they risked losing USA aid if they didn't do something and saying that anyone entering the country illegally would be arrested and deported, Trump turned his sights on Democrats and urged Republican allies to campaign on border security.

A member of Pueblo Sin Fronteras, a group that helps organize caravans, told migrants in Tecun Uman on Thursday night the group would try to cross en masse on Saturday morning, the Associated Press reported.

On Tuesday, Trump threatened Central American countries with aid cuts if they failed to stop the caravan.

Barely a week goes by without Trump warning about the danger posed by ultra-violent Central American gangs like MS-13, while chants of "build the wall" are a staple element of his pre-midterms campaign rallies.

Trump's tweets come in response to the caravan of more than 4,000 people who are traveling from Honduras toward the U.S.'s southern border. Meanwhile, the State Department is attempting to stave off that possibility by compelling the Mexican government to stop them at their border with Guatemala.

Of the tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children and families who were caught jumping the US border in 2017, more than 98 percent remain in the country now, Homeland Security says.

Trump tweeted on Thursday, adding that he blamed Democrats for what he called "weak laws!"

The exhausted travelers, the majority from Honduras, dispersed to the local migrant shelter and parks where volunteers offered them food.

Erika Guevara-Rosas of Amnesty International said in a statement: "Mexican authorities should not take a Trump approach treating people like a security threat".

U.S. officials have already began expressing concerns about the caravan, which also prompted angry tweets from President Trump.

In June, White House officials asked military leaders for assistance in housing migrant children caught up in legal fights over their immigration status, a plan that drew condemnation from Democrats as improper use of military bases.
