Pompeo meets Saudi king on Khashoggi case, Turks study toxic materials

Mr Trump dispatched Mr Pompeo to Riyadh for what the State Department described as

The US-Saudi relationship is now in question given the apparent assassination of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi operatives at their Istanbul-based consulate, which has been reported as an interrogation gone wrong.

Khashoggi, a Saudi national and United States resident who became increasingly critical of powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has not been seen since he walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to sort out marriage paperwork.

The Khashoggi family in Saudi Arabia issued a statement calling for an "independent and impartial global commission".

And when King Salman bin Abdul Aziz welcomed Pompeo, saying, "I hope you are comfortable here", Pompeo replied that he was and added, "Thank you for accepting my visit on behalf of President Trump".

On Tuesday morning's "Fox and Friends", Graham said of bin Salman, nicknamed MBS: "This guy has got to go".

Pompeo's talks with three officials, including the king and crown prince, were "direct and frank" about the need to investigate what happened to Khashoggi, said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert. Noticeably absent from discussions was the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, about whom Khashoggi wrote critically for the Washington Post and whose rise to power prompted the writer to go into a self-imposed exile in the US. He said he has always been a staunch defender of Saudi Arabia on the Senate floor as a "good ally" of the United States.

Murphy and Graham were among 20 Senate Foreign Relations Committee members who support imposing sanctions against those responsible, including the highest-ranking officials in the government of Saudi Arabia. President Trump is also correct when he says thousands of USA jobs would be lost, with China and Russian Federation to be among those lining up to replace them.

During Pompeo's first trip as secretary of state in April, the crown prince kept him waiting several hours for an appointment because he was presiding over the groundbreaking of an entertainment center.

A Turkish team is set to enter the building this aftenoon, "unless something else comes up from the Saudi side", a source said.

On Tuesday, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official acknowledged police want to search the Saudi consul's home as well. That convention covers diplomatic immunity, as well as the idea that embassies and consulates sit on foreign soil in their host countries.

"He had this guy murdered in the consulate in Turkey".

"While the United States has a number of regional and bilateral issues to discuss with Saudi leadership, learning what happened to Jamal Khashoggi is the primary goal of this trip and is of great interest to the President", she said in a statement.

"The king firmly denied any knowledge of it", Trump told reporters Monday.

Until Monday, Riyadh had not allowed Turkish investigators to search the consulate, with reports both sides were at odds over the conditions. "I mean, who knows?"

Erdogan told journalists on Tuesday that police sought traces of "toxic" materials and suggested parts of the consulate had been recently painted, without elaborating. Those policies are all seen as initiatives of Prince Mohammed, the son of King Salman, who is next in line to the throne.

The kingdom has not responded to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Trump has threatened "severe punishment" if it turns out Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, but ruled out canceling arms deals worth tens of billions of dollars.

Trump's warning drew an angry response Sunday from Saudi Arabia and its state-linked media, including a suggestion that Riyadh could wield its oil production as a weapon.
