Apple Customers in Canada Can Now Download a Copy of Their Data

Apple Now Openly Tells US Users What Info It Has on Them

Apple's refreshed Privacy website is live, giving USA users the ability to download all of their data from Apple.

Apple has released a new data & privacy portal that can be used to download data that is linked to your Apple ID. But Apple's practice has been to keep much of that data on the devices themselves and encrypt it with the user's pass code, meaning that Apple does not possess the data and can not unscramble it if asked to do so by law enforcement officials.

But there is, actually, something new on those pages: Apple's now allowing United States customers to download all the data it holds on them through a new privacy portal.

This information can include, but is not limited to, your Apple ID account details and sign-in records, data stored with iCloud such as contacts, notes, calendars, bookmarks, reminders, photos, videos, e-mails and documents, app usage information, a record of items purchased or downloaded from the App Store, Apple Books and iTunes Store as well as your browsing history in the stores, a record of Apple retail store transactions and support and marketing communications.

The page also has links to request that Apple corrects your data, deactivates your account, and permanently deletes your account. If Apple has information about you, it should be available for download as part of the newly updated portal.

Apple CEO Tim Cook called on Congress to create tougher measures protecting people's data and privacy.

If the Apple portal hasn't rolled out to your country or region yet, you can still request a copy of your data. Once you're logged into Facebook, go to Settings and click or tap on "Your Facebook information" on the left side and choose the "Download your info action option". Apple told me it would take 7 days to get it all to me. The refresh is meant to include all the new security features that have been introduced with iOS 12 and macOS Mojave.

The new feature comes as tech companies are under fire for their handling of customer data.

Apple uses differential privacy to discern which features need to be improved, without having to study data on an individual user's activity.

"Apple strives to collect and store the minimum amount of data required to provide the services you use", the company said in an announcement.
