Religious hate crimes surge by 40% in 12 months

They are working to increase understanding about what a hate crime is, how to report it and to remind people what they can do if they see hate crime happening in their community.

The figures by the Home Office came during the hate crime awareness week - a week held every year to raise awareness of the public about this type of offences with various activities and meetings.

Religious-based hate crime accounted for 9 percent (8336 crimes) of recorded crimes.

This week is National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2018, 13-20 October 2018.

Currently, the common definition of a hate crime, agreed in 2007, still stands. Offences are classed a few times if they have multiple motivations.

In the past year, race-based hate crime in Britain increased 14 per cent, while those based on sexual orientation increased 27 per cent, disability 30 per cent and transgender 32 per cent.

Some forces log other types of hostility under the hate crime heading, including reports of misogyny and incidents where victims were targeted due to their age or membership of an "alternative sub-culture", such as goths.

According to the new initiatives taken, the Crown Prosecution Service will update its hate crime resource pack for schools to help teachers engage and equip pupils on issues of hostility and intolerance. If so, it could lead to tougher sentences.
