Million Facebook Users Had Their Personal Data Stolen

Facebook finally comes clean on the recent hack

The attack prompted Facebook to take the unprecedented step of logging out the 50 million users whose accounts were exposed and logged out another 40 million users as a precautionary measure.

In addition, the attackers could see the posts and lists of friends and groups of about 400,000 users. And specifically, 14 million out of them, hackers managed to acquire even more data, such as hometown, the last 10 places they checked into, birthdate and the 15 most recent searches.

Facebook said the attack did not affect Messenger, Messenger Kids, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Pages, payments, third-party apps, advertising or developer accounts.

The vulnerability the hackers exploited existed from July 2017 through late last month, when Facebook noticed an unusual increase in the use of its "view as" feature.

"Now clearly these episodes tell us that Facebook has not done enough that it should have done for the purposes of protecting the sensitive personal data and personal information of its users".

As per the details, around twenty-nine million accounts had some form of information stolen.

The hackers began with a set of accounts they controlled, then used an automated process to access the digital keys for accounts that were "friends" with the accounts they had already compromised.

Although Facebook mentioned that the hackers weren't able to access messages sent by these users, they did have access to messages sent to Pages those users are admins of.

TWO WEEKS AGO, Facebook revealed that a major security breach had put 50 million accounts at risk.

While the affected Facebook users may be able to change some of the hacked information such as current city of residence, password, friends, telephone number, devices, etc, they have to accept a permanent disclosure of permanent details such as their date of birth, work history, and education.

Facebook's lead European Union data regulator, the Irish data protection commissioner, last week opened an investigation into the breach.

Facebook said it was continuing to investigate whether the attackers took actions beyond stealing data, such as posting from accounts, but had not found additional misuse. To put a fine point on it, up 90 million accounts may have been compromised through a bug in Facebook's "access token" system, which is what keeps you logged on despite not opening the app every second of the day.

Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of product management, disclosed that the attackers abused a Facebook feature "view as", which enables users to view their own profile like others.

"Those personal details could be very easily be used for identity theft to sign up for credit cards, get a loan, get your banking password, etc.", he said.

"We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought", Rosen wrote.
