Merkel says ‘still a chance’ for deal on Brexit

Any Brexit deal will still face the hurdle of a Commons vote

She said this included examining issues including policy for the around 100,000 British citizens living in Germany - "many of them for several years" - as well as how to help German citizens and firms working in Britain.

Then it was on to the Irish border "backstop" - the issue that has caused Brexit talks to stall.

"There is still a chance to achieve a good and sustainable exit accord", Merkel told parliament ahead of a crunch European Union summit in Brussels that will focus on Brexit.

The prime minister warmed up for her talks with European Union leaders in Brussels by facing a barrage of questions on Brexit from Jeremy Corbyn, which ranged from the highly technical to the very broad.

What do both sides want out of the summit?

Talks stalled over the weekend between UK Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, and that is what led to the standstill we're seeing now between the two parties.

The Prime Minister has had a tough few days trying to convince her senior ministers of her "temporary" customs arrangement.

"We want to secure a deal as quickly as possible".

She said: "He asks me if the Chequers plan is dead, the answer is no".

EU Council President Donald Tusk attempted to increase the pressure on Mrs May to come forward with new "concrete proposals" at the summit and claimed there were "no grounds for optimism" about the chances of a deal.

A Cabinet source said yesterday that despite May's refusal to give in to European Union demands, ministers were very anxious by what she said to the House of Commons earlier that day, telling BI: "Pizza club should be interesting tonight".

"For now, Britain is negotiating with Britain", Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said, referring to May's troubles with her own cabinet and supporters.

Some Tory Brexiteers, however, believe the Prime Minister has deliberately pushed back the negotiations to the last possible moment to pressurise MPs into backing her plan rather than see the United Kingdom "crash out" without an agreement.

Mrs May said it was always clear that the Irish border issue would be sorted out as part of the separate "future relationship" agreement.

"The Prime Minister said there would no doubt be challenging moments ahead, as that is in the nature of negotiations".

"However, for a breakthrough to take place, besides goodwill we need new facts".

Merkel said: "The chance of achieving a good and sustainable withdrawal agreement in good time is still there, and it is really in the interest of our relations with Britain, in the interest of our economy. and of course in the interest of people in our countries".

In the Commons however she made clear she would not accept any "backstop" arrangement to ensure the border with the Republic remains open which effectively drew a border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May addresses the House of Commons, London, with an update on the latest developments in the Brexit negotiations, Monday Oct. 15, 2018.
