German Prosecutors Slap $928 Million Fine On Audi For Diesel Violations

Audi to cough up nearly $1 billion to pay diesel emissions cheating fine

In this case, the diesel emissions cheating affected almost 5 million cars sold by the Volkswagen group in Europe and the United States, prosecutors said.

Volkswagen was fined for developing and selling polluting four-cylinder engines.

According to the findings of the investigation carried out by the Munich public prosecutor, duties had been breached in the "emissions service/power engine approval" organisational unit in the context of the monitoring of vehicles regarding their regulatory conformity.

Software allowed vehicles to appear to meet emissions rules under lab conditions, while in fact spewing many times more harmful gases like nitrogen oxides (NOx) on the road.

"Considering these special items the Audi Group will significantly undercut major financial key performance indicators forecasted for the fiscal year 2018", Audi said in a regulatory statement.

VW admitted in 2015 to building so-called "defeat devices" into 11 million cars worldwide, in a massive cheating scandal dubbed "dieselgate".

The company said in response: "Audi accepts the fine and, by doing so, admits its responsibility".

The penalty came on top of total costs in fines, buybacks and refits of more than €27 million that Volkswagen had to pay out over its emissions cheating scandal. The case covered some 4.9 million Audi cars sold in Europe, the USA and elsewhere between 2004 and 20018.

Despite Tuesday's agreement, other probes against individual managers and executives from the VW group remain open.

Volkswagen cancelled the contract of Audi Chief Executive Rupert Stadler earlier this month who is under inquiry for suspected association in emissions cheating. The prosecutors said this included profits from the sales of affected vehicles.
