California student 'baked grandma's ashes into cookies'

Cannibal cookies? Student accused of baking grandmother’s ashes and feeding classmates

Officers in California are investigating after a high school student allegedly gave cookies to her classmates containing the cremated remains of her late grandmother.

According to the report, the ash-laden sugar cookies were given to at least nine students in a case that has baffled law enforcement officials.

"This is a weird one", said Davis Police Lieutenant Paul Doroshov.

Even if the student, or students, involved are identified, police are unsure of what charges would be brought them.

Several students did indeed eat the cookies handed out at DaVinci High School in Davis, California, that police suspect may have included the ashes of one student's grandparents. The cookies have not yet been tested.

An anonymous male student at the school told KTXL that he became aware of a fellow student's stomach-turning plot after the girl who masterminded it started bragging to others about what she had done.

The way the school handled the situation indicates that the school is "more concerned about protecting themselves than protecting their students", the student's father said, Fox 40 News reported Monday.

The boy, who ate the biscuits two weeks ago, was asked to make a statement but says he was told to keep quiet about the incident.

Da Vinci High School principal Tyler Millsap said there was "no health risk to our campus or to any one of our students" in a letter sent to parents.

"This case has been particularly challenging and we have responded appropriately and in the most respectful and dignified way possible", the district said in a statement.

"I can say that those who were involved are remorseful and is this now a personal family matter and we are want to respect the privacy of the families involved". I thought that she put drugs in it or something.

The police officer told The Sacramento Bee that it was a "good question" whether the incident could be considered a crime, and that there was an obscure penal code section over the improper disposal of human remains.

Doroshov declined to say whether the students accused of baking the cookies admitted to wrongdoing. "Nobody is trying to be evasive [and] we feel we do know the accurate story".
