Cabinet welcomes joint Saudi-Turkish Khashoggi probe

US embassy in Canberra's cat invite

Citing two unidentified sources, CNN reported on Monday that Saudi Arabia was preparing a report that would acknowledge Khashoggi was killed as the result of an interrogation that went wrong.

The US State Department said he expressed concern about Khashoggi's disappearance during the meeting and told the Turkish president Washington was willing to help with the investigation.

Still, Saudi Arabia responded harshly, saying it would retaliate and escalate the situation if it suffered any consequences from the Khashoggi case.

The case has provoked an worldwide outcry, with US President Donald Trump threatening "severe punishment" if it turns out Khashoggi was killed in the consulate and European allies urging "a credible investigation" and accountability for those responsible.

On Tuesday, Pompeo landed in Riyadh to meet with King Salman to discuss Khashoggi's disappearance. The Washington Post, where Khashoggi was a columnist, first obtained the scans.

Khashoggi, a USA resident, Washington Post columnist and leading critic of the powerful Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago to get marriage documents.

Trump's attempt to distance himself from profiting from Saudi Arabia is undercut by a long record showing deals his companies made with that country's government and citizens, media reports said.

Turkish police on Monday night undertook an eight-hour search at the consulate, taking away soil and DNA samples, although a search expected on Tuesday at the consul's residence has so far not taken place. He offered his assessment after talks with the Saudi leadership and said the Crown Prince denied any knowledge of what happened to Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with King Salman in the Saudi capital on Tuesday, before arriving at Riyadh's royal palace to talk with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Erdogan told journalists Tuesday that police sought traces of "toxic" materials and suggested parts of the consulate had been recently painted, without elaborating.

Khashoggi's alleged killers tortured the journalist during interrogation by cutting his fingers off, Yeni Safak said, claiming it had heard several recordings of the incident.

While Pompeo said the Saudis would conduct a "thorough" investigation and hold any guilty parties completely accountable, he flat out shut down any conversation of the facts of the case.

Police planned a second search at the Saudi consul general's home, as well as some of the country's diplomatic vehicles, Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said. Certain areas of the consulate were to remain off-limits, although officials would be able to inspect surveillance cameras, Turkish media reported.

"Of course, it's obvious the whole thing is in the interests of Iran because on the one hand it has caused serious differences between America and Saudi Arabia, and on the other hand, the young prince's reforms in Saudi Arabia have been destroyed in the public opinion of the world", he added.

The source said the timing of the two events is no accident.

"This guy has got to go", said Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from SC, speaking on Fox television.

The daily reported that in another tape, an unknown individual tells Otaibi: "If you want to live when you come to Saudi Arabia, be quiet!"

"This is going to alter the relationship between the USA and Saudi Arabia for the foreseeable future", Sen.
