The FBI Doesn’t Want Users To Know Who Hacked Facebook

Facebook: Latest hack exposed 20M fewer users than first thought

In Facebook said that hackers gained access to data on 29 million accounts during a cyber attack disclosed two weeks ago.

The hackers controlled a number of accounts on Facebook already and used an automated technique to steal access tokens of friends, and friends of friends, and so on.

Hackers did not steal personal messages or financial data and did not use their access to accounts to access users' accounts on other websites, Facebook said.

In a more serious breach, 14 million people had a wider array of data accessed, including their gender, religion, relationship status, birthday, current city and hometown, device types, education and work history. At the time of the attack, Zuckerberg said hackers would have had the ability to view private messages or post on someone's account, but there's no sign that they did.

According to Facebook, hackers stole information in regard to name and contact details of the accounts of another 15 million people.

The cyberattack did not affect Messenger, Messenger Kids, WhatsApp, Instagram, Workplace, Oculus, Pages, third-party apps, payments or developer accounts or advertising said the company. Here's how to see if you were one of them, and if so, what the hackers got from your account.

He further stated that the social media giants have a "bounden duty" to ensure that the user's data is not compromised in any manner, adding that users will now have to take a call on whether to stay on with Facebook or move on to other networks with more reliable security.

She would not say if the help pages in question had been updated since the company discovered the recent breach. But beyond learning what information the attackers accessed, there's relatively little that users can do - beyond, that is, watching out for suspicious emails or texts.

The attackers exploited a series of bugs on Facebook's platform.

The attackers used a portion of these 400,000 people's lists of friends to steal access tokens for about 30 million people.

Facebook said the FBI is investigating, but asked the company not to discuss who may be behind the attack.

You can find out whether or not Facebook believes your account was affected by scrolling to the bottom of that page.

Typically, companies affected by large data breaches - such as Target, in 2013 - provide access to credit protection agencies and other methods to lower the risk of identity theft.

"We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought". "Usually when you're looking at a sophisticated government operation, then a couple of thousand people hacked is a lot, but they usually know who they're going after".
