Stephen Hawking's final book entreats readers: 'Shape the future'

Wealthy will create ‘superhuman race’ Stephen Hawking essays reveal dark prediction

Apparently, they will die or become irrelevant. "Perhaps, against genetic engineering on humans will be adopted, however some can't resist the temptation to improve human characteristics, such as memory, resistance to disease, life expectancy", writes in the book Hawking. Instead, there will be a race of self-designing beings who are improving themselves at an ever-increasing rate.

Stephen Hawking's final work, which tackles issues from the existence of God to the potential for time travel, was launched yesterday by his children, who helped complete the book after the British astrophysics giant's death.

An excerpt published by the Sunday Times reveals Hawking had concerns that at some point in this century, humans would advance genetic engineering to a point at which they'll be able to create a race of superhumans.

The world-famous physicist argued that gene-editing technologies could lead to genetic augmentation. In it the scientist fears that the wealthy inhabitants of the Earth will be able to modify DNA to increase intelligence, increase life expectancy and improve health and memory.

In Brief Answers to the Big Questions, Hawking looks at the origins of our planet, the controversial role of genetics and the threat of artificial intelligence.

"At first", Hawking writes, "these changes will be confined to the fix of genetic defects - such as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, which are controlled by single genes and so are fairly easy to identify and correct".

'The present world order has a future but it will be a very different one'.

"The real risk with AI isn't malice, but competence".

'A super-intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing goals and if those goals aren't aligned with ours we're in trouble'.

In his answer, Hawking emphasised the importance of education and research, lamenting that funding for science was being significantly cut.

"AI could develop a will of its own, a will that is in conflict with ours and which could destroy us". "We need to be wary of answering back until we have developed a bit further". "It is an exciting, if precarious place to be and you are the pioneers", he told the audience of researchers and technologists.
