Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen dies at 65

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen died Monday at the age of 65, according to a statement by his company, Vulcan Inc., on behalf of the family.

Billionaire Paul Allen, who founded U.S. software giant Microsoft with Bill Gates in the 1970s, died on October 15, 2018 at the age of 65 after his latest battle with cancer, his family said.

"Paul Allen was the driving force behind keeping the National Football League in the Pacific Northwest", Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement Monday evening. Allen announced in early October that the cancer he beat in 2009, had returned, and earlier today it was announced that he had passed. He died in Seattle on Monday afternoon. The Sounders have made the MLS Cup Play-offs in every season of their existence, and signed such soccer superstars as Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins, Nico Lodeiro, Raul Ruidiaz, and Jordan Morris. Allen also started the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, in the same building as the EMP. "And in doing so, he changed the world", added the company's CEO Satya Nadella.

"He is under-appreciated in Seattle", said David Brewster, founder of local news website and the Seattle Weekly newspaper. "There's too much Howard Hughes in the way he behaves for Seattle truly to appreciate a lot of the good that he does".

Allen and Gates were private school friends and young tech geeks from Seattle who, in the mid-1970's, created a computer language for then-primitive personal computers known mainly to scientists and hobbyists.

"In those days we were just goofing around, or so we thought", Gates recalled in his 1985 book "The Road Ahead".

He attended Washington State University but didn't graduate, dropping out and moving to MA to be closer to fellow computer aficionado Gates, who was attending Harvard University. The two would go "dumpster diving" for computer program code.

Allen was a philanthropist who donated billions of dollars for various causes including homelessness and environmental issues. The hyphen was later dropped.

Gates so strongly believed it that he left Harvard University in his junior year to devote himself full-time to his and Allen's startup, originally called Micro-Soft. He remained on the company's board of directors until 2000.

In 1983, Allen stepped aside from day-to-day operations at Microsoft, not long after beginning treatment for his first diagnosis with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Allen's source for his varied investments and sizable charitable donations was his once-major stake in Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft.

Allen and Gates, both college dropouts, hatched the idea for Microsoft in Albuquerque.

Allen, a Microsoft general partner, initially held the title of vice president.
