'I Don't Like it' Trump Says of Disappearance of Saudi Journalist Khashoggi

Republican Sen. Rand Paul says he'll try to force a vote in the Senate this week blocking US arms sales to Saudi Arabia over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Two senior administration officials said the administration has no verifiable information to confirm the Turkish government claims that Khashoggi was killed but that the U.S. is seeking answers about his whereabouts - and talking to senior levels of Saudi government. "I also urge Saudi Arabia, especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release CCTV footage from the consulate".

He said a security delegation of Saudi investigators arrived in Istanbul Saturday to help look into the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.

The newspaper reported that the officials said "a 15-member team came from Saudi Arabia" and that "it was a preplanned murder". "There are people who came from Saudi Arabia", he said.

Erdogan says Turkish police, intelligence and judiciary officials are investigating. Two others flew out commercially, Sabah said. He served as an adviser to senior Saudi officials.

Who is Jamal Khashoggi?

A government source has told me President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is sounding more cautious than the leaks, because if he were to echo the allegations that Mr Khashoggi was murdered, it would mean kicking out the Saudi ambassador and consul general by now.

Turkey on Monday sought permission to search the consulate premises, Turkish NTV broadcaster reported.

"I assure you that the reports that suggest that Jamal Khashoggi went missing in the Consulate in Istanbul or that the Kingdom's authorities have detained him or killed him are absolutely false, and baseless", it notes.

Asked in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" airing Sunday if he would impose sanctions on Saudi Arabia it they're shown to be responsible for Khashoggi's disappearance, Trump repeated earlier remarks that he didn't want to do something that would force U.S. military contractors to lose an order for arms sales, a reference to billions of dollars in arms sales to the country.

Khashoggi, a U.S. resident, has written articles over the past year critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Khashoggi contributed columns to the Post, including some critical of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

His disappearance is likely to further deepen divisions between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The Reuters story cited only Turkish sources without naming them or providing any substantial evidence to support Khashoggi's death claims.

Kaye spoke to The Associated Press moments after he and two colleagues called for an global, independent investigation into the disappearance of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

She said Mr Khashoggi was required to surrender his mobile phone, which is standard practice in some diplomatic missions.

In 2016, Reporters Without Borders published information detailing how Saudi Arabia "manipulates foreign media outlets" in order to "project a positive image of the kingdom internationally".

Mr Khashoggi, 59, has more than 1.6 million Twitter followers and has written for the Washington Post opinion section.

Khashoggi has been a vociferous critic of Prince Mohammed's policies in both the Arab and Western press.
