The Sunday Edition: President Donald Trump Tweetstorm

Lee was a great general’ Trump’s Civil War remarks spark Twitter row

And you know the story.

When one listens to the president's full comments at the rally about the two leaders, it is clear he was calling Ulysses S. Grant, the general of the Union army, "incredible" - not Lee.

Sunday afternoon, President Trump thanked NBC News for correcting their obvious mistake.

President Trump did what he does best when he appeared at a rally in Lebanon, Ohio.

"He couldn't beat Robert E. Lee", he explained. "Was actually a shoutout to warrior Grant and the great state in which he was born", he wrote on Twitter Sunday. With Confederate defeat a near certainty, Lee continued on, battling Union General Ulysses S. Grant in a series of clashes in Virginia in 1864-65 before finally surrendering what was left of his army in April 1865. Trump continued with his praise of Grant, and repeated again that both Lee and Grant were great generals, and said to the OH audience of Grant "he came from right here".

The correction concerns a tweet NBC sent out on Friday night, as Trump held his raucous campaign rally.

The president did indeed say that Robert E Lee was an incredible general.

Today, Trump tweeted in response to NBC, accusing the network of "dishonest reporting" by framing his statement as purely praise for Lee, but not including his comments on Grant.

An earlier tweet misidentified the general President Trump described as "incredible" at a rally in Ohio.

As an example of a more neutral headline, USA Today had an article titled "Trump gives Civil War history at OH rally, describing Lee, Grant as "great" generals". "He drank a little bit too much", Trump said to laughter. Grant really did - he had a serious problem, a serious drinking problem, but man was he a good general. "Even mainstream media embarrassed". "And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia".

This time around he chose to focus on Robert E. Lee, the general of the Confederate Army and what he calls a "phobia" that Abraham Lincoln had of Lee. "An attached video clip lacked the full context for Trump's remark". "You can't change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson-who's next, Washington, Jefferson?" Though Trump has supported preserving statues commemorating Confederate leaders, including Lee, Twitter users were quick to point out that the president's speech Friday focused on Grant's victory over Lee.
