The Latest Climate Science Must Mobilise, not Paralyse Us

Thanh noted that in addition to the adoption of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, Vietnam has issued guidance for the implementation of the agreement focusing on the UN's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

As a country badly-hit by climate change, Vietnam has been active in performing global commitments and building plans to respond to climate change.

The landmark report, released in South Korea on Monday, was compiled by a team of 91 authors from 40 countries following the 2015 Paris climate agreement, in which policymakers from around the world, including India and Pakistan, agreed to work towards limiting the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C.

"Scientists have been warning us for years that we can expect to see more extreme weather with climate change".

The event was jointly held by the MoNRE, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), with the participation of experts, managers, policymakers, scientists and businesspeople, among others.

He said that the European Union needs to increase its 2030 greenhouse gas emissions target to 45 per cent "to be in line with the IPCC's recommendations on 1.5°C pathways".

The IPCC warned that temperatures were likely to rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius between 2030 and 2052 if global warming continues at its current pace.

Earlier on Monday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an worldwide body assessing the science related to climate change, noted in its report the crucial need of a "rapid and far-reaching" changes in all aspects of the entire world to fight against global warming. Coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5°C, whereas virtually all ( 99%) would be lost with 2ºC, Caitlin Wiesen added.

Pre-industrial levels refer to the climate before the industrial revolution when greenhouse gas emissions were stable.

Wiesen commended Vietnam for making significant efforts in climate change adaptation and as the first country in Asia to be awarded with a Green Climate Fund project that is building resilience for coastal vulnerable communities, especially the most-at risk poor and ethnic groups. Vietnam can deploy at least 85 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic generation capacity and 21 gigawatts of wind energy generation, well before 2050, showing that a low-carbon pathway is possible, said the UNDP Country Director.

The new report will feed into a process called the 'Talanoa Dialogue, ' in which parties to the Paris accord will take stock of what has been accomplished over the past three years.

For Canada, that means emissions would need to fall to a maximum of 385 million tonnes a year.
