Russia’s launch failures affect manned, unmanned spacecraft

Astronauts from U.S. Russia make emergency landing in Soyuz rocket after booster fails

"And it can absolutely humble you". They are to be flown to the Baikonur cosmodrome and then on to Star City space training center outside Moscow. On Thursday, Russia's Investigative Committee, the equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said it had opened a criminal probe to examine whether there had been any violations in the construction of the failed Soyuz rocket. Hague and Ovchinin are out of the capsule and are reported to be in good condition. It was Hague's first rocket launch.

The crew members then initiated a "ballistic" trajectory that put Hague and Ovchinin under more than six times the force of gravity and put the capsule into a spin.

Parachutes deployed automatically. The gray-colored capsule tumbled onto grassy flatlands. They may find their mission extended, but at some point they will need to return to Earth.

Russian investigators have launched a probe into why a Soyuz rocket failed shortly after blast-off, in a major setback for Russia's beleaguered space industry. Thursday's accident led NASA officials to acknowledge that they and their partners might need to bring everyone home and hope that the station can function safely with no one onboard, relying exclusively on commands from the ground.

Three astronauts are now on board the space station: NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor, Russian cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst.

Flight controllers kept the three space station residents informed, assuring them, "The boys have landed".

"The search and recovery teams have reached the Soyuz spacecraft landing site and report that the two crew members... are in good condition and are out of the capsule", U.S. space agency NASA said.

They were to dock at the International Space Station six hours later, but the booster suffered engine failure minutes after the launch.

Thursday's accident also comes as both nations remain at odds over the cause of a small hole discovered on the Soyuz MS-09 module attached to the International Space Station in August.

NASA's top official said it was unlikely the Russian rocket failure would speed up development of those rockets because work on them was already flat out, but said it underlined the need for the world to have more than one way of getting to the ISS. It was the first time that the Soyuz - the main workhorse of crewed space flight today - had failed on a launch to the 20-year-old International Space Station.

Harrington’s my pick to be next skipper, says Justin Rose
Whistling Straits in Wisconsin plays host to the 2020 Ryder Cup , where a US team that got trounced in Paris will likely once again be favored.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have sunk to post-Cold War lows over the crisis in Ukraine, the war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential vote, but they have maintained cooperation in space research.

Moscow says the hole is the result of deliberate drilling and has suggested sabotage, while the US space agency said earlier this week that investigators will determine the cause.

The problem occurred when a booster rocket on the Soyuz-FG launch vehicle, launched from the Soviet-era cosmodrome of Baikonur in the central Asian country, failed in some way, NASA said. "The investigation is ongoing, Russian Federation has been very supportive of sharing data with the United States and we're grateful for that".

NASA says it's dusting off its plans for flying the International Space Station without a crew after the aborted launch of a Russian rocket taking two astronauts toward the station. Dzhezkazgan is about 280 miles northeast of Baikonur, and spacecraft returning from the space station normally land in that region.

Sending astronauts to the ISS will be a first for a privately owned company. Russian Federation stands to lose that monopoly in the coming years with the arrival of SpaceX's Dragon and Boeing's Starliner crew capsules.

The Kremlin said experts were working to determine what caused the rocket failure.

"We're tightening our seatbelts", Ovchinin said in the video.

However, Thursday's incident was the first manned launch failure since 1983 when a Soyuz rocket exploded in the launch area.

Bridenstine praised the Soyuz emergency rescue system, saying it functioned like a "miracle".

September 27, 1983: A Soyuz rocket that was to carry Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov to a Salyut space station caught fire in the final seconds of the countdown at Baikonur.
