Astronauts survive fall to Earth

Soyuz-FG rocket booster blasts off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome carrying the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft with Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin and NASA astronaut Nick Hague of the ISS Expedition 57/58 prime crew aboard to the International Space Station (IS

American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin are "resting comfortably" after making an emergency landing of their launch capsule.

NASA has relied on Russian rockets to ferry astronauts to the space station since the United States retired its Space Shuttle programme in 2011, although the agency has announced plans for a test flight carrying two astronauts on a SpaceX commercial rocket next April. The launch was to have been Hague's first space mission.

While the Russian program has been dogged by a string of problems with other kinds of launches in recent years, Thursday's incident was its first manned launch failure since September 1983, when a Soyuz exploded on the launch pad.

The Soyuz FG rocket used in the launch malfunctioned just two minutes after liftoff in Kazakhstan. There was an issue with the booster, according to NASA, forcing the crew to separate from the rocket and fall back to Earth. This caused the capsule to drop very sharply into the Earth's atmosphere. Such a landing is created to decelerate rapidly to bring the astronauts back to the ground, meaning it takes a steep angle of descent and can put the astronauts under extreme gravitational forces, up to eight times normal gravity, as Joe Pappalardo at Popular Mechanics reports. Search and rescue teams were sent to recover the crew.

"Soyuz" made an emergency landing near the city of Zhezkazgan in central Kazakhstan after its booster rockets failed in mid-air en route to the International Space Station.

Shortly before this writing, NASA published a statement that gave us further insight into what went wrong and the rescue mission that ensured Ovchinin and Hague were safe. He said Russian Federation will share all relevant information with the U.S.

It also comes with preloaded activity profiles including hiking, running, biking, swimming, kayaking and skiing to name a few. When paired with a smartphone users can check on texts, emails and more right on the wrist.

The Soviet-designed Soyuz rocket is now the world's only lifeline to the International Space Station and the accident will affect both Nasa and the work of the orbiting laboratory.

Lozano agrees. "Soyuz rockets are relatively low in risk and the safety record is astounding", he said. Unmanned launches of Soyuz rockets might also be suspended, Interfax said.

It also was the first such accident for Russia's manned program in over three decades.

"I strongly believe we're going to get the right answer to what caused the hole on the International Space Station and that together we'll be able to continue our strong collaboration", Bridenstine said on a visit to Moscow this week, according to the Associated Press. Russian activities in Ukraine, charges of interfering in the US presidential election of 2016 and the conflict in Syria are some of the main issues. It's a predicament that would've seemed inconceivable to both Americans and Russians at the height of the space race in the 1960s and 1970s.

The aborted mission dealt another blow to the troubled Russian space program that now serves as the only way to deliver astronauts to the orbiting outpost. Hai Do was the editor. "It's not what you want to happen, but it happens", he said.
