Volvo teams up with global chipmaker for AI-powered cars

Chipmaker Nvidia to supply computer for Volvo's upcoming vehicles

Volvo says it's partnering with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) to develop an AI-capable core computer for the next generation of its models.

The Silicon Valley chipmaker said in January that about 320 companies involved in self-driving vehicles were using the company's Drive computing platform. For them, it means that it's not quite at the Level 3 handoff stage between vehicle and human, but it outperforms any other Level 2-like driver assist package out there right now.

Earlier, Volvo has stated it will not offer level 3 capable cars because the driver in such cars needs to be prepared to take over control of his vehicle within a matter of seconds, which Volvo considers unsafe.

At the start will be available the possibility of the level of autonomy 2+.

The companies are collaborating on the deployment, developing unique 360-degree surround perception and a driver monitoring system.

The core computer is based on NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Xavier technology and will allow Volvo Cars to implement an advanced computing platform for its new cars on the forthcoming Scalable Product Architecture 2 (SPA 2) vehicle platform. Automotive industry will shell out from $20 billion to $30 billion for autonomous driving technology between 2017 and 2022.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced his company's latest deal with Volvo at the company's GTC conference in Munich Wednesday, pointing out that if automated driving is done right it will result in improved safety and driving comfort.

Samuelsson added that Volvo's agreement with Nvidia "is an important piece of that puzzle and helps us to safely introduce fully autonomous Volvo cars to our customers".

Volvo cars announced that they are collaborating with USA based GPU maker Nvidia.

Certain statements in this press release including, but not limited to, statements as to: the benefits and impact of DRIVE AGX Xavier and NVIDIA's collaboration with Volvo; and the impact and requirements of autopilot and a successful launch of autonomous drive are forward-looking statements that are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause results to be materially different than expectations. The system, which is called Zeus, will use a driving software stack from Zenuity, a joint venture between Volvo and Veoneer.

"There is no single player who can do all aspects of this all by themselves", Green said, "therefore it is the collaborators that will win this race".
