Theresa May verging closer to Brexit deal but is facing cabinet resignations

Prime Minister Theresa May's office insisted Friday (Oct 12) it would not "trap" Britain in an endless customs union with the EU after Brexit, amid reports some ministers could quit if this is the price of a divorce deal.

DUP leader Arlene Foster said Thursday that May and her government "could not in good conscience recommend a deal which places a trade barrier on United Kingdom businesses moving goods from one part of the Kingdom to another".

She reportedly pitched her solution to the Northern Ireland "backstop", a major sticking point in the negotiations that has bitterly divided her party and caused friction with the EU.

But a spokesman for Downing Street told Daily Star Online "there are no plans" for the PM to make a public announcement about her proposals for Brexit.

Britain has proposed a customs arrangement with the European Union to avoid physical checks between Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland, until the issue can be resolved with a wider trade deal.

Speaking to Northern Ireland journalists at her Downing Street office, May said on Thursday that talks on the Irish backstop were likely to continue until November.

The DUP has threatened to withdraw its support for the government if it is not happy with the final Brexit deal.

"The prime minister is doing an exceptional job and everybody is behind her", he told reporters.

But it is opposed by some within her own party who argue it would compromise the UK's sovereignty - former foreign secretary Boris Johnson has led criticism and Brexiteers have backed a "Canada plus plus" deal instead, modelled on Canada's free trade deal with the EU.

Then, the bad. The DUP are threatening to vote down the budget if May signs up to a compromise they don't like.

"An agreement is within reach", he said.

Sammy Wilson said: "It was a way of reminding the government that while our vote wasn't important last night, it would be important some time in the future and we would have no hesitation withholding it if we thought that was a necessary sanction to impose".

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt and the Leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom also said to have "deep concerns". Britain rejects the EU's proposed solution - to keep Northern Ireland inside the bloc's single market and customs union after the rest of the UK leaves - because it would create new barriers between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK The EU has asked for a counter-proposal from Britain.
