Instagram ramps up battle against bullying

Instagram is now using machine learning to detect bullying in image uploads

They are using a machine learning technology which would proactively detect bullying in the captions or the photos and will be sent directly to the community operations team to review.

That's why today we're announcing our latest tools to help combat bullying, including a new way to identify and report bullying in photos.

Still, Instagram is attempting to promote better behavior with a new "spreading kindness" campaign featuring teen dancer and actor Maddie Ziegler (of Sia music video fame), which encourages users to tag friends and spread a new camera effect with positive, uplifting sentiments. It's unclear what else the technology can detect and whether it would work on images without captions.

The tool - according to the company - will be more beneficial in removing bullying.

On Tuesday, Instagram added more weapons to battle bullying in the world of Internet and social media.

Following the departure of Instagram's co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in September, newly appointed VP of product Adam Mosseri wrote in a blog post: "As the new head of Instagram, I'm proud to build on our commitment to making Instagram a kind and safe community for everyone".

The feature is expected to roll across the social globe in just a few weeks. Anyone who follows Ziegler will have the camera effect automatically. If you switch to the rear camera, you see the word "kindness" in different languages. Your tagged friend will be notified as per usual, and they can then share this post to their own story, or "spread kindness" with a selfie of their own. The technology that enables such detection was surveyed past year by Wired, which highlighted the company's inner attempts at machine-learning comment filters.

Beyond photos, Instagram has also added a bullying comment filter to live videos as part of efforts to keep a fun platform for all users. Users can also turn off comments on individual Instagram posts and block posts with certain keywords.
