Fyre Festival Founder Sentenced To Six Years In Prison

Billy McFarland the promoter of the failed Fyre Festival in the Bahamas leaves federal court after pleading guilty to wire fraud charges in New York. A federal judge has given Mc Farland a six-year prison term. Mc

A federal judge in Manhattan has given the promoter of last year's highly publicised failed Fyre Festival in the Bahamas a six-year prison term. "Let's just do it and be legends, man", a marketing executive for the festival reportedly said as the event's imminent catastrophe became increasingly evident. McFarland was first arrested and charged with wire fraud a year ago, with a subsequent arrest this June for running a fraudulent ticket-selling scam. Additionally, prosecutors determined McFarland did not feel remorse. "I've lived every day with the weight of knowing that I literally destroyed the lives of my friends and family".

Hundreds of millennials traveled to the Bahamas in April of 2017 to attend the Fyre Festival.

McFarland and co-promoter Ja Rule chose to scrap the event, which resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars worth of lawsuits, against both Billy McFarland, Ja Rule, and The Fyre Festival. She added that a diagnosis of bipolar does not excuse his behaviour. McFarland pleaded guilty in March to two counts of wire fraud and for two more counts of fraud in July. In June he was arrested for another ticket scam: NYC VIP Access, where he sold people $150,000 worth of fake tickets to events, like the Met Gala and the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Judge Naomi Buchwald presided over the case in the U.S. Southern District Court and referred to McFarland as "a serial fraudster" in sentencing.

Seems like McFarland hasn't seen the last of the court room, yet.

McFarland continues to face a multimillion-dollar class action lawsuit from ticket-holders.
