Federal Bureau of Investigation ‘superinformant’ owned the limousine company in deadly Upstate New York crash

Shahed Hussain the owner of the limo company involved in the crash that killed 20 people had served as an FBI informant in two terror stings Fox News has learned

USA officials have also launched a criminal investigation into the accident and the firm's three remaining limousines have been seized by police.

Public records indicate Hussain still owns the motel and continues to operate the limo company.

Hussain's listed address is the same as in bankruptcy records for the Shahed Hussain who testified in Manhattan federal court at the 2010 trial of four men he recruited into an FBI sting operation after infiltrating a mosque in Newburgh. The cases included one that resulted in convictions of four men in a thwarted 2009 scheme to attack synagogues and military planes.

But Hussain's work also came under attack by defense attorneys and civil liberties groups as entrapment.

But defence lawyers said he was a master manipulator who entrapped a group of nobodies while earning $96,000 (£73,000).

"I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that there would have been no crime here except the government instigated it, planned it and brought it to fruition", McMahon said.

"That does not mean there was no crime".

In this May 21, 2009 file photo, David Williams, center, is led by police officers from a federal building in NY after being arrested for plotting to bomb NY synagogues and shoot down military aircraft. Hussain was a key figure in the FBI's case against the so-called Newburgh Four-four Muslim men sentenced to 25-year prison terms after they were convicted for placing what they thought were bombs in a NY synagogue in 2010.

According to U.S. media reports, Mr Hussain left Pakistan in the 1990s to seek asylum in the USA after being accused of murder.

"We have located the owner of the company", said Maj.

He went to Albany, where he received asylum.

According to a report from Albany CBS Affiliate WRGB, Governor Andrew Cuomo has said the driver of the limo that crashed and killed 20 people did not have the appropriate driver's license to be operating the vehicle. According to the Times, the informant with the last name Hussain used the name Malik when working with the F.B.I.in the past. But Hussain, under direction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, befriended them, provided them with money, and supplied all the materials and instruction for the plot they were eventually convicted of: Firing Stinger missiles at military planes flying into Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, N.Y. and detonating bombs at a Jewish Center in Bronx, N.Y. Hussain's role in the Newburgh case was also the subject of an HBO documentary.

The limousine was reportedly on its way to a birthday party when it blew a stop sign at the end of a highway in Schoharie, killing all 18 people in the limo and two pedestrians.

Although Hussain's undercover work had exposed his residency in Wilton, he never left the area and for years had lived a quiet life at the hardscrabble motel along Route 9 a few miles north of Saratoga Springs. The limo company was registered at that address.
