As Climate Change Increases, Our Mental Health Declines

Global warming could literally drive you crazy new study reveals

The team led by Obradovich looked at mental health information from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System of over 2 million Americans and correlated it with daily meteorological and climatic data changes between 2002 and 2012.

Obradovich and his colleagues used the responses to classify people into two groups: those who reported any recent days with poor mental health, and those who didn't. But conducting individual assessments of so many people was simply not feasible. Because certain factors, such as lifetime adaptations to climate, can not be accounted for, the new study allows the researchers to say only that, on average, "warming over time associates with worsened mental health over time", he said. Increases in average monthly temperatures to more than 30 degrees Celsius - 86 degrees Fahrenheit - were associated with a 0.5 percent increase in the probability of mental-health issues, as did months with at least 25 days of precipitation. The authors explain that yearly warming climates, short term exposure to extremes of weather as well as routine exposure to cycles could have a detrimental effect on the mental health of individuals. "Warming over time associates with worsened mental health over time", Obradovich told CNN. And over five years, a one degree Celsius increase in average temperature results in an even greater prevalence of mental difficulties. Further precipitation days also raised mental health problems they noted.

It also recommended investing in mental health resilience-building through parents and teachers; and psycho-social provision in schools and community spaces, especially in hardship contexts such as conflict and natural disaster settings. Both people with low income and women were 60 percent more likely to have emotions tied to weather than those with a higher income and men, respectively, according to the study's findings.

The CDC data showed that after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast region in August 2005, reports of mental health problems increased in places with declared disasters.

Finally, the team examined mental health reports from people affected by Hurricane Katrina and compared them to reports from people in comparable-sized places that had not been affected by the catastrophic hurricane. Patz and his co-authors found that high temperatures impacted admissions for self-harm, including attempted suicide.

The researchers named a few, including the fact that rising temperatures may force some people to move, uprooting their entire lives. Good thing Miami is neither hot nor wet! He warned that a 2 degree Celsius rise can push human mental health over the edge.
