Turkish police focus on 7 suspects in Khashoggi case

Turkey demands convincing explanation on 'missing' Saudi journalist

Turkish officials have said they fear the columnist was killed inside the premises. Saudi officials insisted he left the building through another exit, but have not provided public evidence to prove it.

The Washington Post published Monday an image from a closed circuit television camera that a person close to the investigation said showed Khashoggi's last known seconds, as he stepped inside the consulate door. Politicians in the U.S., Riyadh's main ally, have warned that any harm done to the Washington Post contributor will jeopardize America's relations with the world's largest oil exporter.

Last week, Jamal Khashoggi went missing while visiting the Saudi Arabian consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

He has not been heard of since. "Canadian officials are actively seeking more information", Adam Austen, a spokesman for Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland.

"We have to get an outcome from this investigation as soon as possible".

Decades of close U.S. -Saudi relations, which have only intensified under Trump, appeared in jeopardy by the suggestion of a carefully plotted murder of a government critic, Jamal Khashoggi, 59, who disappeared a week ago after entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey.

The Turkish security camera video was reminiscent of the surveillance video sleuthing done by officials investigating the assassination of a Hamas operative in Dubai in 2010 or the slaying of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's half brother in Malaysia in 2017.

Turkey's Anadolu Agency also reported that the group of Saudis were briefly at the consulate.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said this week that the kingdom would allow Turkey to search the consulate for Khashoggi. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has demanded Riyadh to prove his departure from the building.

Two Turkish officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to the AP because the investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance was still ongoing, confirmed the authenticity of the images in the Turkish media.

7.0 quake hits Papua New Guinea
Speaking by phone from Rabaul police station, Constable Roy Michael said he felt the natural disaster but "it was not too strong". No damage has been reported, but PNG officials said they could not contact villages closest to the quake's epicentre.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée.

Erdogan, whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam, also supported a government in Egypt led by the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia has designated a terrorist movement. "Consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying 'he has left, '" Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, where he is on an official visit.

Khashoggi was one journalist who chose to "report the reality".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said national security adviser John Bolton and presidential senior adviser Jared Kushner spoke Tuesday to Crown Prince Mohammed about Khashoggi.

Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia previous year saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy over the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent, and since then wrote columns for the Washington Post newspaper.

BBC Newshour interviewed the journalist just three days before his visit to the consulate, and in an off-air conversation asked if he would ever return to his home country. "I can speak when so many cannot".

On Saturday, Turkish officials told the Post that Khashoggi had been killed at the Saudi consulate.

However, according to media reports, Turkish officials are increasingly convinced that the Saudis killed Khashoggi.

The two regional heavyweights and United States allies have engaged in a delicate balancing of shared interests and opposing positions, sometimes teaming up to oppose President Bashar Assad in the Syrian conflict, for example, while sparring over Saudi Arabia's campaign to isolate Qatar and its regional fight against political Islam.
