Hurricane Michael aftermath may cause record highs in northeast Florida

Florida

Michael is expected to leave the mainland United States by Friday morning.

Even before landfall, the hurricane disrupted energy operations in the Gulf, cutting crude oil production by more than 40 percent and natural gas output by almost one-third as offshore platforms were evacuated before the storm hit.

According to forecasts, "Michael" will sweep in from Florida to Maryland. "I would have to say at least as long as it did for Hurricane Andrew, and that took months and months". The wind force in the center at that time had reached 249 km/h.

"Today is the day".

With the hurricane still pounding the state hours after it came ashore, and conditions too risky in places for search-and-rescue teams to go out, there were no further reports on deaths or injuries by nightfall. As the clock struck Thursday, the storm had weakened to a tropical storm.

The temperature of water in the Gulf of Mexico has been warmer than usual for this time of year, which helped make Hurricane Michael a powerhouse. President Donald Trump has endorsed Scott and DeSantis.

Michael, the 7th hurricane in 2018 in the Atlantic basin. "It looks like another big one".

The governor activated 750 National Guardsmen for storm response on Monday, on top of the 500 activated the day before. "There's still stuff we don't know about hurricanes", Klotzbach said.

Scott said the National Guard got into Mexico Beach and rescued 20 people who survived the direct hit.

Panama City could see a storm surge at depths from 6 to 9 feet. Just as Northern politicians are judged on how they handle snowstorms, their Southern counterparts are watched closely for how they deal with hurricanes.

"The storm surge is absolutely deadly".

"Don't think that you can ride this out if you're in a low-lying area", Nelson said on CNN. The governor has declared a state of emergency in 35 counties and is stressing that residents should "absolutely" evacuate if ordered to. But as the world heats up, we can expect stronger storms, said Adam Sobel, an atmospheric scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Though most homes were still standing, no property was left undamaged.

Several hours after the hurricane made landfall, the eye of the storm had moved out of the Panhandle and was just west of Albany, Georgia, the NHC said. You can not hide from this storm.

Travis Brooks, Director of Seminole County's emergency management agency, told ABC News there was "complete and total devastation".

Hurricane Michael was a sly storm, one that seemed nearly unexceptional at first.

"A northward motion is expected through tonight, followed by a northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday", NHC analysts predicted.

Florida Fish and Wildlife has put 40 additional law enforcement officers on notice to deploy with a variety of special equipment, including boats that can be used for high-water rescues.

By 8 a.m., winds had slowed to 50 mph as Michael crossed SC, about 40 miles west of Columbia, The storm had picked up speed to a fast 21 mph and should continue weakening.

Storm warnings have been issued across most of the Gulf Coast, from Tampa to much of the Panhandle.

NWS offices in Jackson and New Orleans/Baton Rouge issued 11 tornado warnings for areas that would not experience an actual tornado but would experience extreme wind speeds commonly associated with tornadoes. NPR's Emily Sullivan reports state and local governments are preparing for torrential downpours. The roar of the winds, he said, sounded like a jet engine. They anticipate torrential rains and winds of upwards of 120 miles per hour.

Gov. Rick Scott called the destruction from Wednesday's storm "unimaginable", as "homes are gone, businesses are gone". FEMA is already on Floridian ground providing assistance in the form of the EPA, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.

"Water will come miles in shore and could easily rise over the roofs of houses", he said.

Gulf Power, which provides electricity in hard-hit Bay County, anticipates people in the impacted areas could be without power for weeks as the utility rebuilds parts of its system. He spoke to WUFT.
