Google appeals against record €4.3b European Union fine over Android

Google appeals EU's $5 billion fine over Android antitrust practices

According to a report in The Verge, Google on Tuesday filed the appeal.

In July, the European Commission fined Google over concern the search giant's agreements with phone makers, such as Huawei, Samsung and LG, put those companies at a disadvantage by making them dependent on Android.

In a statement to Reuters, Google said it had "filed our appeal of the EC's Android decision at the General Court of the European Union".

The Commission's ruling gave Google 90 days to end the anti-competitive behaviours or face additional penalty.

.

Google provides Android free to smartphone manufacturers and generates most of its revenue from selling advertisements that appear along with search results. Ms Vestager described any such action as "a trojan horse" implying that the European Union would come down harshly if such a workaround was in use. This stopped Amazon from being able to find third-party companies to make devices using its Android-based Fire OS.

In response to the charges, Google CEO Sundar Pichai penned a blog post in July titled, "Android has created more choice, not less".

EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager ruled that the mega-corp had "denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete" at three levels - the enforced installation of Chrome as a browser, without which Google Play Store would not function, paying sweetners to mobile networks to offer its search exclusively, and prevented those companies from using a rival build of Android, of the type that Microsoft seems intent on.

US President Donald Trump also slammed the European Union for fining Google, tweeting that the incident proved that the bloc has "taken advantage of the US, but not for long!"

This fine comes not long after a $2.7 billion charge from the Commission over Google giving preferential treatment to its own shopping comparison tool in searches.
