7.0 quake hits Papua New Guinea

The quake’s epicentre was 125km east of the town of Kimbe

"It's still too early to determine whether there is a possible tsunami threat to Hawaii".

Strong earthquakes struck Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian island of Bali on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of major damage.

Meanwhile a magnitude 7.0 natural disaster also affected Papua New Guinea, striking shortly before 5am.

The epicenter was 125 kilometers (78 miles) east of the town of Kimbe on the island of New Britain, according to the United States Geological Survey, which said it struck at a depth of around 40 km.

Speaking by phone from Rabaul police station, Constable Roy Michael said he felt the natural disaster but "it was not too strong".

No damage has been reported, but PNG officials said they could not contact villages closest to the quake's epicentre.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said waves less than 0.3m high could be expected on coastlines in Papua New Guinea and neighbouring Solomon Islands.

Australia's Tsunami Warning Centre said its coastlines were not at risk. But scientists don't have any tide gauges close to the where the quake happened, so are unable to say at this point whether tsunamis have been generated.

A magnitude 6.4 natural disaster struck the northeastern coast of East Java shortly before 3am, with local news reports stating three people have been killed by collapsing buildings.

However, it added: "Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazard such as tsunamis, landslides and liquefaction that might have contributed to loses".

Just over an hour later, a magnitude 6.3 quake hit farther northeast on the island.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and numerous world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
