Vitamin Supplements Does Not Impact Bone Health

Vitamin D Supplements Give Little To No Improvement To Bone Health Says Study

However, a series of studies showed that vitamin D produced in the form of supplements, prevents fractures and improves the mineral density of bone tissue.

In response, Daniel Fabricant, PhD, president and CEO of the Natural Products Association, pointed out that numerous health organizations in the United States and around the world advocate for sufficient vitamin D intake, including the US FDA and guidelines in the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia.

Two of the study's three authors - Mark Bolland and Andrew Grey, both from the University of Auckland - have been leading investigations into vitamin D since 2012, and each time they have presented dubious conclusions about the benefits of the supplement.

Prof Bolland said things have changed since 2014, when the last major review of the evidence was carried out.

This is the largest meta-analysis to date, combining data from 81 randomised controlled trials, involving more 53,500 participants, with more than half the studies involving daily dosing. Researchers reviewed trials to figure out the effects of the "sunshine vitamin".

Khashoggi's reported killing: 'No state can ignore such a move'
Embassies and consulates under the Vienna Convention are technically foreign soil and must be protected by host nations. It said they checked into two hotels in Istanbul on October 2, the day Khashoggi went missing, and left later that day.

"On the strength of existing evidence, we believe there is little justification for more trials of vitamin D supplements looking at musculoskeletal outcomes", Bolland told the Guardian.

Contrary to current medical guidelines, a meta-analysis suggests that vitamin D supplements do not significantly improve bone health.

The best way to naturally get the flawless amount of vitamin D needed by the body to stay healthy through exposure to the sunlight. It found that people who are not deficient will not likely see any benefits.

Current guidance from the Department of Health recommends taking vitamin D supplements during the winter months - when levels available from sunlight exposure are low. Doctors may need to question whether they should be prescribing supplements to those at risk of developing osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions, or instead focusing on lifestyle advice to lessen the risks.

"This thinking is reminiscent of the fervour that supported the widespread use of vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E years ago, and all of those vitamin trials later proved to be clinically negative".
