PM not swayed by major climate report

A view of the Bayswater coal-fired power station in the Hunter Valley

Leaders from countries such as Botswana and Namibia must continue pushing on the global stage for nations to make good on, and improve, their pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

An increase in temperatures of just 1.5C could destroy the Great Barrier Reef, a new report says. Coal is also Australia's largest export, according to McCormack.

Emissions will need to fall 45 per cent from 2010 levels - or 58 per cent from current levels - by 2030, the IPCC said.

The report stated that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius rather than 2 degrees Celsius will lessen the considerable impacts to the ecosystem and human health, helping to achieve the UN's sustainable development goals. Our new analysis from the Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR) project shows that for Botswana and Namibia 1.5C of global warming would lead to an average temperature rise in each country of 2.2C and 2C respectively. They serve as an example of the interconnectedness of climate change impacts, a characteristic that creates interacting, compounding negative effects. In response to the first FAQ, "What are the impacts of 1.5°C and 2°C of warming?" it states "The impacts of climate change are being felt in every inhabited continent and in the oceans". Any additional emissions will require removing Carbon dioxide from the air. Hot summers will become more frequent, and, wrote federal scientists in 2017, if carbon emissions remain high and water management systems aren't changed, chronic, long-term drought is increasingly possible by the end of the century.

Australia, the planet's biggest coal exporter and the fourth biggest producer, won't stop using coal to power the generators that produce its electricity. Tom Udall said the USA must heed its "urgent warning" and "take decisive action to halt climate change in concert with other nations".

"Natural gas flaring and leaks are wasteful, pollute the air we breathe, and undermine our best efforts to grapple with climate change", he said, calling for "significant" investments in clean, efficient energy production. "Within a few generations he is burning the fossil fuels that slowly accumulated in the earth over the past 500 million years".

It has been almost four months since the tragic death of the couple's 19-month-old daughter Emmy. "I love you, My baby girl". Beck, 31, was about five months pregnant with their son when Emeline died after falling into a neighbor's pool in June.

Yet, the USA never moved to curtail fossil fuel use.

Countries should now strive to keep the Earth's temperature rise to only 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) instead of the 2°C target agreed to at the Paris Agreement talks in 2015, urges the United Nations.

"Our economy depends on the coal industry, and we can have both a strong coal industry and reduce carbon emissions".

We are running out of time to prevent catastrophic effects of climate change from reshaping our world.

The IPCC is the global body for assessing the science related to climate change.

The Labor party has capitalised on the IPCC report and used it to demonstrate the their view that the Coalition isn't unified on its' approach to climate change and that more conservative elements of the party are undermining the Government's ability to put forward sensible policy in regards to emissions reduction.
