Microsoft announces Project xCloud

Microsoft looks to take Xbox experience onto mobile

Microsoft plans on starting public testing of Project xCloud sometime in 2019. While this might be a title most play through consoles or on PC, the most recent update for the game saw 60% surge in data traffic over normal peak traffic levels on Verizon's broadband network, as well as a 5-8% jump on mobile.

Project xCloud now works via 4G and 5G networks and uses Microsoft Azure as part of the overall stabilization process.

"Our goal with Project xCloud is to deliver a quality experience for all gamers on all devices that's consistent with the speed and high-fidelity gamers experience and expectations for their PCs and consoles", said Kareem Choudhry, corporate vice-president of Microsoft's Gaming Cloud division, in a blog post announcing the Project's launch.

A new customisable blade hosts the component parts of multiple Xbox One consoles, as well as its associated infrastructure. Rest assured, if a problem crops up in nearly any corner of the world, Microsoft will at the very least, be able to hear about it and take steps to ensure that the problem is solved as quickly as possible. Microsoft is now testing this service and it will be rolled out for pubic trials in 2019. It says the system works on devices paired with an Xbox Wireless Controoller though Bluetooth, and games are also playable using a touch overlay. The gaming world is changing, and we've seen the likes of Blade's Shadow, Nvidia's GeForce Now, Playstation Now, and even Google Chrome's own browser-based streaming solution gain traction over the past year. Microsoft researchers and developers are working on ways to combat latency, not just though new networking tech but through video codec refinements. Interestingly its test experience is running on a 10Mbps connection.

"Delivering a high-quality experience across a variety of devices must account for different obstacles, such as low-latency video streamed remotely, and support a large, multi-user network". With the next PlayStation and Xbox surely coming out in the next year or two, will streaming really take over as Microsoft wants it to?
